I just went to cook a gammon steak I've got in the fridge, still unopened and well before use by date. I thought it looked a bit off, so I held it under the light and the bits that looked dodgy actually glow a sort of fluorescent green. Seriously, WTF? I've never seen this before. Anyone know what it is?

It's probably fine if it smells ok.

Unsmoked bacon is referred to as 'green' bacon by some.

It's just an opalescent effect. It's associated with most pig meat.

If it's just the shimmer on the surface it's fine. If the green colour has penetrated the surface of the meat or if it's still green after you've cooked it then don't eat it.

It was fine - the irridescence is caused by light being refracted/reflected through thin layers of fat on the surface. The mechanism is similar to what happens in opals or oil on water.

It can often be seen on bacon or sliced beef.

Actually it was more like 8 minutes, just after I read Cosmo's post. I'll send a photo of the binned meat to Oxfam just to irritate you even further.

I was just about to ask if that happened on sliced beef too, but you answered it already lol

I notice it a lot on sliced roast beef that supermarkets sell for sandwiches, the really thin stuff.

It can also be a derogatory term for a homosexual, just to clear that one up...

I don't think I'm the one thats the idiot - do you need me to explain humour, jokes or just the definition of the smiley I used.

It was a joke "you idiot!".

Hi,

No one in our office knew that! Our definition of 'Batty' is head in the clouds, scatterbrain or eccentric. This definition is per the dictionary. However, I now find that 'Batty' is Internet slang for gay which I believe being politically correct is derogatory and should not be used to define homosexuality.

Thank you for your input.

Hi,

Yes I know what a smiley is, but I believe you took offence due to which I now learn that 'batty' is pertaining to homosexuality. Firstly, I have nothing against people regardless of their sexual preferences and enjoy going to Mardi Gras in Sydney every year and have a great time. Secondly, you're at it again! First, you infer you know the sexual preference of Mr Batty by your comment to me. Now, you profess to know whether I am or am not an idiot! Perhaps you should apologise to Mr Batty for your comment implying that he is homosexual by your comments to me.
