since big brother has already caused the Uk to lose at least one citizen to the international community ie the fine upstanding Tim to south africa, i think allowing a foreigner in is the least endemol Uk can do

let's hope he or she is up to Tim's standard

If this is true then surely getting the £210 would count as working? Then he's be in violation of his student visa

And as an aside I wonder how/if their security will be better than in previous years. Obviously having things shouted and thrown is part of the BB experience and hasn't really been discouraged (well not in time) especially as the house hasn't moved away from near the Tesco's carpark. If there is a really hated person (and yes that example could include an asylum seeker not that I believe that) will we, for once see some serious protests?
Or indeed if it goes the same rubbish route it did last year would there be the opportunity for some sort of a retaliation by the viewers, wouldn't take too many if you think of it.

I wonder where that figure of £210 a day has come from. I once read that they got less than £50 a day. (sorry but I can't remember now where I read it) I remember thinking at the time that it was a total pittance considering how much endemol makes out of the housemates .

I've heard HM's on previous BB's calculating how much they would be owed by the producers when they get out and it has always been £30 as a subsistence allowance, it may have gone up though

Maybe the paper just got it wrong and it should have read £210 per weekas that would tie in with it being £30 per day

Today's Star on Sunday (which I made my husband go into a shop and buy because of the Jade front page - much to his undying shame!!!) says that two of the 40 shortlisted applicants have said they do not want to appear with a refugee, as there are thousands of UK citizens that would give anything to appear on the show. They have apparently withdrawn from the show in protest. But remember this is in the Star!!!!

I'm sure that the Daily Star is as 'reliable' as ever, but I did find the comment at the end of the Star article very offensive:

"So now we're housing them in plush Elstree pads?
Disgraceful."

I suppose it is to be expected from such a rag, but I wish that people would remember that some asylum seekers are genuine and not consider everybody to be scroungers. I have mentioned some time ago, in another thread that many years ago when I was a child, my family had to seek asylum after my father fell foul of the political regime in Nigeria. Basically, he was a doctor and he objected to the system of drugs that were meant for patients being sold by authorities. He was arrested and imprisoned for complaining.
To cut a long story short, we ended up here and I think that all of my family have tried to contribute to the country that took us in. My father worked in the NHS and my brother is now a doctor too, specialising in the treatment of HIV. I'm a nurse.
Sorry to rant, but I do feel that in the current political climate, some very genuine cases are being forgotten. I'll go back to happy mode now, rant over.

That's just sick...If true it means people would give up the prospect of fame and fortune out of a racist desire not to have to share a space with an asylum seeker.....

a lot of people are fed different stories about asylum seekers, if they are genuine we should welcome them with open arms but if they are only in this country for a free ride they should be booted out, we should wait and see the situation this person is in before we judge, although i can see the point of a few who say waiting to get word of your asylum application and being on a reality programme dose not mix. (before anyone jump in saying im racist, im not)

Refusing to appear because an asylum seekers might be on the show is simple racism (if the story is true)....I couldn't care less how many scare stories have appeared in the press all to eagre to stir up ill feeling...there is no reason..at all...why an asylum seeker can't appear on a TV show...

I though 'resident in the UK' was the criterion?

Asylum seekers just appear on day trips and ship back to France for the night then? They would also be resident in the UK, despite there pending legal status And anyway...as we have seen frequently before....Big Brother makes the rules..it's their show they can do what they like.....

They'd be ineligible on the grounds that they're not here for ten weeks.

As long as they can speak good English, otherwise not only will we have a text message banner at the bottom of the screen but a subtitles banner as well and we wont be able to see anything, although that might not be a problem if this year's group of HMs are as crap as last years lot.

The Orkneys are practically off the map and we had to put up with that Cameron guy...at least we've been promised someone with a sense of humour....

Dont think so, aren't we constantly being told that the asylum application process takes months, years even...........

If an asylum seeker was ineligible it would be because asylum seekers are not allowed to take jobs and being paid to appear in a TV show might be considered to be a job

Blunkett would probably send the SAS in to snatch him live on TV..............quite an opportunity to parade his right wing credentials to the tabloid fodder

I don't think they actually get paid a wage on BB, I thought they got paid expenses.

If any Asylum seekers do get on the show the producers will probably make them climb over the fence to get in.

'Ineligible' in the context of my post referred to 'day trippers' who would, for a given period of time, be 'resident in the UK'.

I'm sure the boffins at the Inland Revenue would drive a horse and cart through that argument..........

I wonder what Cameron's enlightened opinions are on this subject....What does the Old Testament say about Asylum Seekers?

It would be too late then, they wouldn't see the paperwork for about a year and the show would have been done and dusted by then.

More importantly, what will the British electorate think?

Fortunately for us we have the tenacity of the British press to uncover any lies the government might try to tell us.
