Hi... Has anyone used the Intelliplug with the Humax foxsat? Only I saw a comment on Amazon that the plug detects the amount of power going to the TV screen and switches everything off when it reduces. However when his Xbox went into screensaver this pursuaded Intelliplug that the TV was off and switched everything else off.

I wondered how the plug would behave when Humax goes into screensaver mode. Does anyone have any experience of it?

Please be warned that some products sold as energy saving devices could actually consume more power than the devices they are switching off. For instance a Humax STB consumes about 0.89W in standby and most modern TVs consume very little power in standby.

I would check, with the manufacturer of each product, exactly how much power it uses when in standby and also find out how much energy the energy saving device uses.

The Foxsat does not save any power when in Screen Saver mode, only when it goes into full standby does its power level drop.

That's an interesting thought.... Though I wanted it to turn off all the other stuff automatically such as the sub, that I can't get to easily and the wifi box, etc.

It doesn't switch the Humax off as that goes into the 'always on' socket. This is the one I'm considering if anyone is interested.

I have intelligently plugged all my AV kit I want in standby into a unswitched socket gang that cannot be easily got to and plugged all the kit I want to be powered off into a switched socket gang that is easily accessible. Simples!

I have tried (well, still am) using a slightly different Intelliplug -

to control my Subwoofer (which sits behind my TV). This one is designed for Desktop computers rather than TV's so it's not looking to switch off the 'main' plug - it's assuming that is already 'off' - and is only looking to control the peripherals (like your sub)

How well it works will depend on the type of TV you have. I've got a plasma and the power draw drops significantly when displaying mostly black (like the Humax screensaver) and this is enough to turn the Intelliplug off. When a picture returns the plug switches the sub back on. It's not ideal as I slightly worry that the frequent on/off cycles will shorten the life of the subwoofer.

If you have an LCD TV it should work perfectly as my understanding is that, due to their backlights, LCD power consumption is pretty constant.

I'd like to control my Sub with Infra Red so that i can easily switch it on when i'm playing music (with the TV off) but it seems impossible to find an infra red remote socket - they're all radio controlled now. I've invested in a Harmony remote so don't want any other remotes hanging around as it rather destroys the convenience. Other options (eg X10) start getting very expensive. I think the sub idles at about 24Watts so it would be nice to do something but to make it pay for itself it's only worth spending about £20 (and i'm already £20 down on solutions that haven't really worked)

I tried to use an Intelliplug like the one b33k34 linked to above, to control my Humax HDR, DVD player & surround amp.

And yes, when the Humax screensaver came on, the Intelliplug switched everything off, apart from the TV (Panny 32" LCD) which was in the master socket.

Everything else would then come back on as the TV switched back to a Freeview channel.

I guess the TV uses less power with a dark screen, and the Intelliplug noticed this.

Then noticed the same watching films on TV or DVD, when a dark scene of more than 2 seconds everything would switch off.

So now not using it.

I'm surprised that happens with an LCD. The problem is that they've tried to make these things idiot proof - we need to be able to manually set the current threshold rather than having the plug set it automatically.

Exactly my thoughts about them too.

I'm sure it said on the box it was meant to be intelligent and adjust itself to the power levels of the equipment, so I left it for a couple of weeks, but nothing changed!

Not too bothered as I got it free through work.

I suspect it sets the 'off' voltage at 50% of peak or something similar.

It's not like the power consumption of my plasma sinks to nothing with a black screen - i'm sure when i measured it i found it was still over 100w (vs a tech spec of 299w and real world with bright pictures around 260w)
