Just got my first LCD TV delivered today (Toshiba 32RV635D) which is capable of 1080p.

I've noticed while watching BBC HD the resolution on my foxsat HDR was set to 576i. I thought it would change the resolution automatically, but it seems not.

Should I just set the foxsat to output in it's top resolution (1080i) and just leave it on that? Or if I switch to a SD broadcast am I best of switching it back to 576i, or do I leave it on original so it auto changes with the broadcast!?

GAH! Sorry about all the questions! I just don't want to potentially damage my new TV by leaving it on 1080i all the time.

If you leave the box on 'original' as you say your TV will auto change and the TV will upscale SD input. If you leave it on 1080i this won't damage your telly, the Humax will upscale SD rather than the TV. Some think their TV's upscaling is superior to the HDR, personally i can't see any difference and leave mine set to 1080i.
When the HDR is set to 1080i changing between channels is less 'clunky' and the EPG is a higher resolution.

I think I'll also leave my box on 1080i as I can't notice the difference between the freesat box upscaling and the TV's upscaling.

If I had a more expensive TV it would more than likely make a difference, but not on an entry level set like mine.

My telly was the latest Panasonic when I got it a year or so ago (with rave reviews and a price tag to match etc) and I still can't tell the difference. Maybe because the TV has picture sharpening/enhancing etc?

You need to test it for yourself as some tv's make a huge difference - mine does.

@sargent, you should get hold of a THXII disc and calibrate your tv. You'll enjoy a much better picture in the long run although sometimes initially after shop settings it can seem dim for a short while (shop settings are usually quite poor). Usually things such as sharpening etc are best set at neutral. It all depends on the tv.

If you can't get your hands on a THX II calibration disc then many movies have some THX picture calibration tests in the extras secition.

The low res menus are enough to make me keep mine on 1080i

I'm with you there, and screen formats can jump about when on original

@ White-Knight, I took of all sharpening and lowered the shop settings when I first had the set (everything was far too bright), I've set it up to my preference now.
