Back on Topic though,

I hope that Phil Redmond isn't drafted in, In my Opinion he is great at the ideas, and is a good writer, and I have a lot of respect for him, but he insists on BIG storylines all the time, 1 after the other, etc, how many of the forum readers here, live in a street, that's had a gas explosion followed by arson, followed by a bomb, followed by a terrorist raid,

The reason Corrie, always fairs better in these situations is that they have characters that have been around for years, and have lived there lives on the screen, sometimes not having much of a story for years, but they make it just that bit more realistic. ok Mike seems to be a bit unfortunate with his facotry's (doubt he'd get fire insurance anymore! mind you I doubt Angie's Den would either!)

What Eastenders writers need to look at is where the story's are going in the long run what's the goal for these characters, not get them married, then get them seperated within the year, (thinking, Billy & Little Mo, (Possibly Alfie and Kat)), again look at Corrie, they have some marriages that have lasted, (Vera and Jack), some that have had rocky patches, but they live through them (Kevin and the anouying one, Ken and Diedre (I know they're not married, but they might as well be!)).

Eastenders needs characters that are real, and that you feel affection with, and that last the test of time in the square, all soaps go through the dulldrums and in this multichannel world, it's likely to get worse for them, not better!

I was always of the view that the BBC should have picked-up Brookside when the deal with C4 ran out. They could have scaled it back to two episodes (half-hour) a week teamed with EastEnders, as an indirect counter to the ITV light-hearted soap hour with a more gritty, issues-based soap hour. With a trial of about a year and the same creative focus Brookie had in it's last year the BBC could have been able to eventually expand it and scale back EastEnders- surely something that is desperately needed.

That said I have mixed feelings about Redmond coming now. It would almost certainly help the soap in the short-term but I don't know about the long-term. A Brookie-style look at drugs and alcohol, gambling, poverty, etc wouldn't really suit EastEnders as it is now. It would be better, but it wouldn't suit it.

I have seen him credited as executive producer on some episodes along with Louise Berridge.

One thing I'll say- phil Redmond can join EE as long as he doesn't add the dreaded filmic effect to the show. Problem is, he likes it so much, I find it unlikely he wouldn't. It would ruin the feel of the show, much like it did with Brookside.

I think he would be brilliant for EE. I used to love Brookeside - epidemics, hostage crises, 'proper' incest, weird cults, you name it, EE could have it too. Top it all off with a plane crashing into the tube station just as the double decker bus (where does it go by the way?) drives past and there you have it. Dirty Den becames very dirty when he falls in the canal, Michelle arrives in the nick of time and whisks away Vicky, Phil DOESN'T come back, neither does Peggy and Sam and Andy marry and move away.

I seem to remember his name in the credits under Producer or Executive Producer, in any case in them days EE was a good soap. Hopefully todays article will kick the BBC into action and demote Berridge if not in fact fire her.

Oh yeah, great - Phil Redmond...

This means that if Grange Hill is anything to go by, EE will be set in "Liverpule" by the end of the year!
