I purchased some value bread from the supermarket. It was buy one get one free. I'd normally buy Warbutons but my mum was with me at the time and she suggested it and I don't argue with my mum because it makes for an easier life.

Obviously I'd not heard of the brand name. But I made a tuna fish sandwich for my lunch and the bread wasn't as bad as I was expecting.

Which led me to think. Isn't bread just bread? The ingredients seem fairly basic. How much difference is there between value bread and a premium loaf?

Do you buy value bread? How do you rate it? Do you try to hide it under your other groceries? Can you get value bread from posh stores like Waitrose?

Which led me to think about the differences between value products/ranges and those higher up the food chain.

The quality of the flour probably plays a part too.

I only eat M&S bread, and even then I have to squeeze them all until I find the perfect loaf

Yes I use value bread often and it is what it is, good standard bread.

I do find that it doesn't stay fresh as long as an expensive loaf but that would mean that the expensive loaf has more additives to stay fresher longer. If you use a whole one within about 3 days then they are fine.

Expensive bread is nice but then so is anything expensive.

I think in the main where its own-brand, the own-brand value range, or for that matter premium range are really hardly noticeable. But when you compare value range (eg from Netto) against brands like Heinz beans/soups then I can definitely notice the difference in quality

I knew someone who used to work on packing and he said they had the products going down the thingy and every so often switch to value packaging.

It's down to personal taste too - no bread IMO is as good as that I make myself but others would probably disagree. So buy and eat what suits you is my motto.

Value bread is probably put together by youngsters, earning minimum wage, who make it by the bulk load, with the cheapest ingredients, in poor conditions.

Premium bread is probably put together by an elderly baker, on good money, making a few at a time, with premium ingredients, in Buckingham Palace.

You get the idea.

My son is very fussy when it comes to bread. He will only eat Hovis Wholemeal Thick.

Tried to trick him once, bought another brand and put it in Hovis packaging, he said he could tell it wasn't right straight away.

Kinda what I was thinking. With bread it seems (to me) that there isn't much of a difference. I can understand the freshness thing but that isn't an issue for me as a loaf would normally be consumed before it got stale (I do love tuna fish).

Yet there is an enormous difference in price.

For me it's Kingsmill all the way. You can get it from the local shop for £1.

Tried Sunblest though the other week and that stuff, urgh.. had a sandwich and it was sticking all over my fingers. Cloying, urgh!

I don't like white bread, and tend to only eat wholemeal. I don't really care what the brand is, prefer if it's from a bakery but thats about it.

Sorry, I'm too fussy! I can't eat bread that's sold in a supermarket - I get a fresh loaf from the bakers every second day.

My preference is Kingsmill wholemeal. Do they make value bread in wholemeal? I've only ever seen white sliced loaves.

What about the nutritional benefits of value vs premium?

I can fully appreciate why alot of folk prefer the premium items. Is that purely on taste? If so, what goes into the bread that makes it taste better?

I prefer the taste and texture of value bread over premium loafs. I must be strange.
