Goldfrapp - Head First
Carmen Queasy
18-03-2010
You can stream it in full on their MySpace page: http://bit.ly/head1st

I've had it for about a week now. Part of it is growing one me (mainly "Head First", "Hunt" and "Shiny and Warm") and parts are growing old already ("Rocket", "Alive" and "Believer").

What do you think?

I LOVE Goldfrapp, and I really like what I've heard of the new album so far. 'Believer', 'Rocket' (grum remix) and 'Head First' are my favourites so far.

My opinions have changed since the first time I heard it.

I think my favourites are Head First and Voicething.

It's a shame it's so short, though! Felt Mountain is about the same length but the quality of that album is much better.

I've only recently come across 'Felt Mountain' and its great. Goldfrapp have really created some unique music over the years.

It's not bad per se but it's comprised mainly of the sort of Abba-esque electro pop Erasure were pumping out nearly 20 years ago (of which I was a fan) topped off with an instrumental which could have been a B-side from Alison's days singing with Orbital.
I expected something a bit more adventurous from Goldfrapp who did this sort of thing much better with Black Cherry. Why go over old ground?
The new Golden Filter album actually sounds more like the LP Goldfrapp should have made after the last one.

It's quite nice - chilly - but needs a few wow moments.

It's really grown on me now and I can say I like it Probably more than Supernature, too (which, in my opinion, is still their worst).

It's grown on me also however i'm still at bit pissed off that there's only really 8 tracks on there (i'm not including the instrumental). I wonder why? Something must be up. She was talking recently about pressures from the record company.

I agree. It's sort of Kylie like. I was expecting something a little more groundbreaking from them. Plus it is so short. But I guess someone must like it since I read it's at #5 in the midweeks.

Goldfrapp have a lot of hardcore fans who will buy their album anyway.

The album has grown on me, but I can see it growing off me very quickly, unlike Felt Mountain, Seventh Tree and Black Cherry.

I like it, but i think it would have been better if the first 3 tracks were broken up.

It gets a bit less poppy with track 4 onwards - and a bit more satisfying.

Love the fact they change musical style with each album - Head First is top quality 80's powerpop, a shame Gaga fans aren't lapping it up as I think it would appeal

Well, I love Goldfrapp, and I love pop, so I am LOVING Head First!! I think this could actually become my favourite Goldfrapp album, although I doubt many of their fans will be with me there.

But seriously, I hate seeing people and critics saying that it's 'too pop' etc. Every song is top quality, as the last person said. And that makes up for there only being 9 songs. No filler at all. Love it love it love it.

There is no filler - but I don't mind a bit of filler on my favourite artists albums - their filler is better than other artists albums....take Goldfrapp for example....

Black Cherry

White Soft Rope
Gone To Earth
Yes Sir
Big Black Cloud Littel White Lie

Supernature

All Night Operator
Beautful
super-saint

Too poppy - deffo never lived up to the fantastic Black Cherry

I got the album yesterday and haven't been able to stop listening to it. Great work as usual by Goldfrapp!

Dreaming and Hunt are my two favourites...voicething is unnecessary...I can see why they put it on but I'd prefer 1/2 more songs instead.

Yo there, LJ. I agree about Voicething.....it's a skipper for me. Amazing album, otherwise.

Alison Goldfrapp was sensationally retro cool and charismatic on Jonathan Ross. Just fab.

Me neither. A colleague made a 'gentle' complaint about how I keep singing, 'Oh, oh, oh, I got a rocket....'.

Whaaaaa. Who cares?

Perhaps because it is.It seems that she has decided to disgard her more experimental element - which she certainly has in her.You can't criticise people who express their opinion who would prefer her continueing in that direction either.
I just don't get it really when fans of pop try to dismiss people who are not attracted to a generic pop form of music. You should know what pop is all about. If you like it you sould be satisfied with that.If the pop on this album is a good as you say, I'm sure it will sell well.Don't think it will appeal to me though, I prefer her experimental trip-hop stuff more.
