So Florence And The Machine Have Had To Admit Nicking Some Melody'Tut Tut
I do find artists like Flo and Gaga a bit off putting when they overdo the artistic stage act. It's too eccentric.
Gaga has ripped off Boney M and their tunes.Check em out on youtube."Ra Ra..etc"was done by them. Flo reminds me too much of Kate Bush and Siouxsie and the Banshees and the payment of royalties to Gang Gang for being found out is a bit worrying. It's at the beginning of the Florence song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nxO-yPQesA And 1 minute into the Gang Gang song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqn7kaCm8No The group Gang Gang make a valid point that she should have come up with the "homage" excuse much earlier on. She also relies on backing players too much and when singing vocals on the Alan Carr show you could hear her backing vocals on the backing tape. Why can't these people keep music live ? I'd never pay to see someone "live" if they cheated with backing tapes.I want real musicians and singers otherwise I can listen to my CD at home. I fear she's carried a lot of her music around for a number of years and the best has been placed on Lungs. The next album won't be that good;not that Lungs was anything to write home about. The song structures are demented and all over the place and she needs to work on her diction and also whether she wants to be a singer or an actress. It all smacks of someone who went to Drama school but please let's not have Kate Bush 2. |

I saw Florence live last year at Reading and I can tell you she has one hell of a voice
I love her album so much and obviously a lot of other people do too considering it's gone 3x Platinum. I can tell that you don't like her so what's the point of starting a thread about it just to get people annoyed?? |

She's Ripping Off Kate Bush But Most Of Her Audience Probably Never Heard Of Kate
The melody theft is worrying and she has admitted it and is paying for it just like Gaga probably will who is now being sued.
These artists like their backing tapes are phoneys.Keep music live and write your own songs. |

People always complain about backing singers being on tape but what a lot of people may not know is that a lot of artists do their own backing vocals! You can't expect someone else to replicate that and if it is a song that relies on a lot of backing vocals to carry melodys etc then once you take them away all you are left with is a lead vocal. When you listen to a lot of these big songs you hear on the radio, just imagine there being no lead vocal for a second..........you'd be surprised at just how vital those backing vocals are to carrying the beat or carrying the melody.

Just because Kate Bush existed doesn't mean there can't ever be an artist like her ever again!!
I hate it when people say "oh so and so ripped of so and so" give the newer artists a chance!! Kate Bush isn't God! |

She DID acknowledge that the two lines came from House Jam in an interview last year (which was the first time I listened to Gang Gang Dance), I'll go dig up the link.
As for singing to a backing track, the only times where she's sang to a backing track were her two Top Of The Pops performances (where they pretty much force acts to sing to a backing track) and her two GMTV performances and Alan Carr performance which was down to technical reasons as opposed to by choice. Hence why she appeared so uncomfortable singing to the backing tracks on both performances this week as she's used to performing live with The Machine. If you'd bothered to at least look into it a bit more, you'd know she performs with a live band at all other times. Her live shows are amazing and there's no point on commenting if you've not made the effort to look up a performance (as opposed to making a judgement based on two TV appearances). ...and in no way has Florence "ripped off" Kate Bush (and yes, I am a massive fan of Kate Bush as well as F+TM). It just sounds like you're trying to justify your apparent dislike of Florence + The Machine. EDIT: ...and "demented" song structure? Examples, please. EDIT2: And if you're gonna pull up backing tracks etc being a problem, Kate Bush mimed various times during TV appearances and it doesn't appear to stop you from liking her. |

eurgh!
Why does every new artist have to be 'like' some other artist!? It's obvious that every artist will have strong influences but that doesn't mean that they are now trying to copy that artist! She isn't the new anybody! She is FLORENCE! |

as a massive fan of Kate Bush, Florence hasn't 'ripped her off' both performers are artistic in their music and i love them both for being against the grain.
Dog Days and Rabbit Heart are modern pop masterpieces, and Lungs is the best album of last year. while,Wuthering Heights,Running Up That Hill,Breathing and Cloudbusting are some of Kate's greatest songs and the best songs ever written/sung! love both artists very much indeed x |

Looks like I wasnt the only one who noticed that, I'm a fan of GaGa though but nicking melody rhythm or anything off another artists is silly.
But she's paying for it now. And as for Florence, I don't hear it. |

Eventually comparing Florence to Kate Bush will become as tired and pointless as the Muse/Radiohead argument. At the end of the day they sound vaguely similar, and nothing more.

The trouble comes when these things get to court and the lawyers bring in academics who explain with total credibility that the person whose lawsuit it is also stole it from someone before them. Pop music is always going to adhere to the nostrum that genius steals. What sticks in the craw is mediocrities not knowing the art of higher cribbing.

Im sitting here listening to the Boney M tune you were talking about and Im sorry but just because they both use Ra Ra, hardly means she stole a melody! It sounds nothing like anything shes ever done!
So i wouldn't count gaga in this and for the record, she's being sued by her ex bf/ producer because he claims he deserves more money than hes getting for co writing papparazzi and Beautiful, dirty, rich. So hes not saying she stole songs, she writes her own music of her own accord and she doesnt steal. But Florence defo has from the sounds of it! |

Kate Bush has influenced every serious female artist that has gone after her. I'm sorry but Hounds of Love for me is the perfect album and remains a sort of template for serious female artists to work from, Natasha Khan, Florence etc. They all have borrowed elements from Kate Bush. So I don't think hat it's ripping off Kate Bush.
I am a huge fan of Kate Bush. But Florence is one of the few modern day female artists who I respect, as she has a very good voice as well as song writing skills. |
