I think they train with the coaches for a couple of months before they meet their pro partners. So surely they have quite a good idea of the celebs potential.

Other pros come from the US and go where they have to - why the hell can't he. 4 years on the trot takes the p!ss really. Especially seeing as its obvious the Emmerdale celebs are going to be known by ITV viewers and therefore may have a bit of an advantage with the viewer vote.”

Has anyone from Emmerdale ever won ?

Sorry dont watch it

Er, no, it means what it says - the producers will have the final say over the choice of couples. Obviously. I'm struggling to see how even you can find something controversial in that, but apparently you have. Oh well...

Just when are the pairings decided? Presumably before training starts - so why the suggestions of bias?”

I agree to a large extent - it's far less easy to predict who is going to be very good than people seem to think. I don't think Fred, Andrei or Susie got an obviously bad draw this year, things simply didn't pan out in the way we might have expected, unluckily for them.

However, it is easier to predict who is going to be bad.

I'd have said Maria should have been due either Bobby Davro or Dr Hilary this year. However, she got one of only 3 males under thirty instead. Now I like Maria. She always seems to get the best from her partners and fair play to her for her results thus far - she's a great skater. Having said that, if she isn't given an unco-ordinated coffin dodger () next year I'll want to know the reason why!

They audition the celebs first to see what they're like, then they go with coaches. Then they meet Torvill and Dean.
Then according to T&Ds website "Before you know it, Jayne and Chris are leading their new charges by the hand and assessing their various strengths and weaknesses – and beginning the process of matching the right professional to the right celebrity. After the initial lesson with Jayne and Chris in October, the celebrities have to practise for 10 hours a week at their local rink until given their partners in November.

“In the beginning, when we go on to the ice with them we are trying to understand their personalities, to see how they will react under certain pressures and how much they are like to progress in a short space of time. . Other factors come into it, of course, such as size and deportment,” says Jayne.”

Ok, that's all interesting and I agree that Jer, Emily and Sinitta appeared to have potential, they can't predict popularity with the likes of Sinitta.
So it's audition, then coaching, then chris and jayne, then coaching, then they start with the partner. They seem to match alot on personality and how the celeb likes to learn, be it with a pro that takes their time or one that likes to advnace with a celeb quickly and visa versa.

It's something that annoys me every year and I still don't understand how they pick the partnerships. There must be a fairer way of doing things.

Hayley and Dan shouldn't have been partnered together, especially as they are childhood friends. That was a big advantage straight away.”

Hayley and dan are brought together by geography and height anyway.

Andrei had Clare and then a series of disasters but at least two of those Gemma and Sinitta shouldn't have been early leavers. Sinnita underachieved one suspects due to the racial bias in the voting and being given a move she couldn't do. Gemma might have been expected on size, phsique and fitness to have done better. Andrei also hasn't done the tour or the specials in recent years which may be a factor against given him someone who will do really well and be important for the tour.

Fred has had 3 middle of the table performers who might have done a bit better. Dan and Matt have had a couple of top performers each and some in the middle. There's nothing in there with Dan given Gaynor wasn't an obvious winner and its no coincidence the 3 best females ever have been in the 5-1 to 5-3 range and some other male pros are too tall for them/needed for taller celebs.

Susie is due someone better but Jeremy may have been meant to be it after she had two years getting into the middle table with one person who could have done better and one who stayed longer than he should have. Don't know how tall all her males have been but size may be a part of why she gets who she does and males built like Steve Backley were never going to win.

Its not even that surprising that Maria has a good male celeb again after Ray - there were 4 or 5 potentially good ones in there and the two obviously dud male celeb skaters went to new people so the odds ran that way.

I totally agree, I dont know what the Kieron fans problem is with Hayley and Dan. Just because they have fantastic chemistry and are the best overall this year. It was all to play for at the beginning and very fair. I also think that the Kieron fans are coming over as really desperate as well! Come on, get over it and let the best pair win!

I've said this before - sorry

Don't forget the tour factor, Susie and Andrei, Mel and Fred are given pro routines as was Kristina with Matt (I think) and Frankie gets a spot with a couple of the male pros - Maria only skates with the celeb, possibly because she's a professional coach and not a show skater - if she gets a dud she doesn't tour - given her record that seems more unfair, she's penalised for doing a great job and she's certainly earned her money this year
Alexandra may have been unlucky with Bobby Davro but she has Ray Quinn on the tour so it hasn't turned out badly for her
I don't understand why we have to have the DrHilary/Bobby Davro kind of celebs - that's not ageism, with the possible exception of a few superb athletes the over 50s can't compete physically with 30s and 20s
IMO they should start with a maximum dozen celebs all with the potential to do well and if the series really has to run for around 13 weeks there could be a 'practise' first 2weeks where nobody goes out - just a thought

I don't think it's that he won't go anywhere, it's that the celebs have to be near where they work, so if there is any female celeb who is based in the north it makes sense to partner them with a pro who has a base nearby. Common sense really.

I also think the pairings probably take into account physical build of the celebs - no point putting Sharron with one of the shorter male pros.
I imagine some thought is given to personality too, it makes sense to try and pair celebs with pros who they think will suit them personality wise - for instance look at Frankie's partners, Lee Sharpe, Chris Fountain, Ellery Hanley and Danny Young - all likely to be sufficiently confident to work well with her big personality.

For the producers, the pros are there to do a job, not win a competition, I suspect giving them all a fair chance to win at some point is unlikely to be very high in the partnering priorities!

If I was Jayne or Chris I would draw up a list of all the pros and go from 1-7 as to who deserves a good chance (pro) to win the title - girls and boys - and then as soon as the celebs are sorted (height permitting) assign the best ones to who is number 1 in each list - and the worst to who is nuber 7.

Based on the last five series this is how my list would run for the girls.

1. Suzy
2. Molly
3. Alexandra
4. Mel
5. Frankie
6. Brianne
7. Maria

And for the boys

1. Andrei
2. Fred
3. Stuart
4. Pavel
5. Matthew
6. Matt
7. Dan

I don't think it's always a case of a Pro being given a 'Dud'

Some Pro's are fantastic at getting the best out of their Partners no matter who they are - for example Dan - He went a long way with What's Er Face whom Emmerdale who was also in Home and Away (Emily?) and Gaynor was definately not looking great at the start of Season , but Dan showed them off brilliently and tempered his style so that he never overshadowed them.

As I've discussed on another Thread someone like Kristina doesn't have that ability to temper herself and so if she gets someone who doesn't improve quickly they look more like a 'dud' next to her.

Andrei I think has been unlucky with getting girls who aren't appealing to the public and Suzie definately has the ability to get an average skater far (Todd Carty!) so I think their time will come

I agree Susie deserves a good partner

I'd like to see Molly back too, and stay a bit longer next time
