Dry FIPS in cats
LQS
24-03-2010
Our poor Otto has just been diagnosed with this. They found a lump in his belly when he went in for his boosters in Feb, and after a lot of investigating and exploratory op they have now decided that it is almost certaily FIPS.
So far, he has a lympg gland in his belly that is enlarged to the size of a golf ball, and no other symptoms.
The vet has basically said, it is terminal and will be so within 4-6 months. Otto is being put on a drug regime of interferon and steroids.
Does anyone have any experience of this, any advice, any cats surviving ?

Very sorry to hear this. I saw several cats with FIP when I worked with an animal welfare society, and I am sorry to say the prognosis was not good.

Sadly, we had to have Otto put to sleep on Saturday. He went downhill rapidly after a period of seeming to respond to the drugs, in the space of only two weeks.
His final day was spent with us in the garden, and he died quietly and peacefully in the backgarden. He went very quietly as he had grown very frail. Otto was only 2 1/2.

So sorry for you loss of Otto. He went surrounded by all the ones he loved. Run free at the bridge little one. My cats simon and kay will take care of him. They where both taken too soon as well

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss LQS. I had a cat taken from me much, much too soon too. Doesn't seem fair does it? They way Otto went though sounds beautiful, if you know what I mean. I mean, if you could choose...you'd want to go surrounded by loved ones wouldn't you?
Like Maisey says, I bet he'll be running around all over the place fit and healthy at Rainbow Bridge! I bet he'll come back and visit you occationaly too. I know some don't belive, but I do, and I've had visits from my beloved cats. Thinking of you at this sad time though. I'm sure Otto was very greatful for sharing his life with you. After the shock, to help me deal with the pain, I would say, I miss you badly, but I love you more than I could ever miss you, and thank you for having me in your life.
(((hugs)))

Thank you for all your kind words.
I am glad somebody else thinks that our pets stick around. My husband has heard Otto a few times upstairs, padding about like he used to, and I have had the distinct feeling at times that he has been in the room and been sitting on the back of the sofa !

Sorry to hear this LQS, he was so young - I am sure you will miss him very much but at least you know he is at peace and not suffering.

(I'm afraid the rainbow bridge thingy makes me want to heave)
