Any free software out there that can accomplish this. I've tried looking this up on the web but I can't find anything, possibly because my search criteria is wrong.

I've been trying to do this. I believe you need to convert AVI to MPEG2 and then us AV2HDR (http://www.hummy.org.uk/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=93).
However all the 'free' conversion programs turn out to be free to download but then add a watermark if you don't by them. Any decent really free ones out there ?

Presuming you mean the Foxsat-hdr. It depends on the video data in the avi. If it's a standard TV resolution eg 704 x 576, 720 x 576, 1440 x 1080 or 1920 x 1080 and a standard frame rate of 23.976, 25 or 29.97 frames/sec then it's worthwhile. You need a mpeg2 encoder for the lower 2 resolutions or a mpeg4 (h264) for the HD ones.

Any other frame rate or resolution will need so much resampling it's frankly not worth the effort

I do hope that you are speaking from more than 15 days experience ..
as i too have just downloaded in expectation and read as follows.

VideoSpin is a free product. Some advanced video and audio codecs may require a purchase.
You have a 15 day trial period to use these codecs,
after which you will need to purchase the SpinPack in order to continue to use them
.

Dismayed I then read that the 'Advnced codecs' include..

MPEG-2

Please tell me that i am not wasting my time..

Try this one, it’s completely free and does work with AVI to HD among others.

It’s PayPals donate software so if it works you can donate if you feel it’s worth something.

It converts all sorts of files so you will have to have a play with it.

It will be slow if like me, your computer is lacking RAM and a “getting on” in years processor.

The link for download is on the top left hand side with a file size of 42.4Mb .
