sat nav for a pedestrian

Can anyone recommend a satnav for a pedestrian.

My friend has found using my iphone easy to use, with the compass adding navigation on foot, we have both found trying to use a W995 (which does not have a compass) quite tricky, but iphone are very expensive so any cheaper recommendations would be great.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 1390 that has a pedestrian mode, which I've used once and it's ok. I've never used anything else as pedestrian sat-nav though so I can't really give you any in-depth comparisons.

You can also buy "City Xplorer" maps for certain cities that enable you to get pedestrian routing that includes use of public transport but I have no experience of them.

Get a Nokia. Voice guided navigation is free and it works for pedestrians. Go to the Nokia site and find the model you want!!!!!

How hard is research really

Not sure of the budget yet, cheepe the better really but then we dont want to go so cheep that the satnav is rubish and takes an age to get a location and then keep loseing it.

I quite like the look of the navigon one, as it has an ecompus and looks nice, does anyone have experiance of them, it will be mostlly used in greater london so will mainly be sourouned by tall billdings. My only htc phone was rubbish, sometime it took so long to get a fix on my location we had walked to where we wanted to get to before it had got a fix.
