I just moved into a new house & need to find the number of the landline there. Can someone tell me how to do that?

I know theres a number to dial, but can remember it. The line has a dial tone, but you can't call anyones number!

Thanks, Paul.

I cannot remember the engineer's number to do that, but phone a number you know from that phone and if it's a landline you call, 1471 it from there. If its a mobile, read it off the log.

EDIT: Sorry, I did not read the original post properly - I see that you cannot dial out. But will it let you dial 150 or 151 - BT customer service and fault numbers?

If it is a sky line dialling 150 will take you to their customer services.

Before I moved into this house, BT said that they'd need to charge me a reconnection fee, but now I've discovered there is a dial tone & number associated with the line would that really be the case? If I call BT with the number do you think I'd be connected for free?

BT website says for your situation it "SHOULD be free, but they have a couple of get outs, eg you must supply details of last 2 years permanent addresses (credit check?) line must not have any outstanding debt (previous tennant?) plus others

Have you been able to confirm that the line is controlled by BT (it may be with another supplier).

It may be to your advantage to contact the other suppliers available on your exchange, before contacting BT, to get quotes for connection to use as bargaining points in case BT do want to charge a connection fee or require a deposit.

Decided to go with the post office for the cheaper line rental. Called them up & they are having none of it... They want to charge me £110 & insist that an engineer needs to visit to do a survey... What a bloody carry on. There is no need for an engineer to come to visit, surley??

I already told the post office that the house is only 3 years old & it has a ne style BT master socket that's in good order. I get the feeling I'm being screwed!!

Does anyone know if its possible to call BT from an inactive line & if so what's the number? If that's not possible, do BT have a number I can call from my mobile using the free minutes (eg not 0800 which is charged for from a mobile).

Thanks!
