Celine/Mariah/Whitney. All 3 were extremely popular in the 90's, some even would say they owned the 90's due to the fact that big ballads were 'in' then. Now since 2000, its more pop and catchy songs that do well e.g. Lady GaGa or Beyonce.

Yet although all 3 are legends, none have done brilliantly in the last few years. Celines last album 'Taking Chances' made it to No.5, Mariahs 'Memoirs' got to No.23 and Whitneys 'I Look to You' got No.3.

I personally feel they are all outstanding singers, and their latest albums have all been brilliant especially Taking Chances. Do you think these 3 are past it or can any of them get back on top and claim the No 1 spot? I think its sad that the press criticize them more than focus on their singing talents. For example more attention is paid to Whitneys drugs than her voice.

So ultimately I would like your views on the 3 singers above, and if you feel they have a successful future? Do you still rate them highly?

I think they're past it. Whitney's comeback was hardly a success (#5 single after X Factor, album was a minor hit), Celine has been hit and miss but has nowhere near been any threat to the top ten in years and Mariah's singles have failed to chart half the time, even XF didn't boost 'I Stay In Love' into the top 40. Her last succesful single was #6 Touch My Body.

Unless they start doing upbeat dance stuff with rappers or turn to pure pop then their time is up, imo.

Mariah is just plain confused imo. Emancipation was a huge seller and maybe got her new fans but then she completely changed direction and did Hip-Hop/R&B/Dance on the follow up. And then Memoirs was mainly ballads, if I wasn't a fan i'd be completely confused on which direction she wants to go in.

Whitney's newest album is actually amazing, a modern classic imo. She didn't have very successful promo though (XF was a shambles, people talked about the dress more than the song!) She should release a new album next year and take care of her voice a bit more. If it was up to me, she wouldn't be on a world tour. It's probably damaging her voice even more.

It's a shame but Mariah and Whitney have both lost their vocal abilities.

The noughties and teenies are all about Beyonce, Leona and Christina vocally. They are the best of their generation.

Re: Whitney and Mariah. I agree its a shame. Especially when their success is so tied to their voices, say if Madonna lost her voice it wouldn't really effect her music because its never been about that. I've always been the kind of person who prefers a good vocal over catchyness or a hook. Any old singer can have those things imo.
Tbh though, I do prefer Whitney's newer stuff, she does have some classics from the 80s/90s, but I think on the whole everything post-My love is your love is a lot better than the stuff beforehand. For Mariah I think the opposite, she was definitely in her prime during the first few years. I still think her best song and best vocal is Vision of love. Obviously though their massive inspirations to pretty much every female pop singer since.

Celine still sounds great though. But I always thought the other two were just that little bit ahead.

I do agree with the poster who said about the 'new' trinity being Christina, Leona and Beyonce/Kelly/JHud.

I like some of Whitney's earlier stuff, but I can't say I've ever liked a Celine Dion song... and Mariah is a personal bugbear of mine.

Whitney embarrassed herself recently in Australia with extremely poor vocals
Mariah just takes her clothes off to get noticed nowadays

Celine is the only one who still has her voice, yet strangely she cares less about her chart success and just concentrates on performing.

I think the 3 big divas of today are Alicia/Beyonce/GaGa
They are the three taking over charts all around the world. Not Aly Burke and Leona.

I think that tastes in music have simply changed
Like the 90s were a decade about powerful ballads, like Whitney's, Mariahs's etc. and they did well
Nowadays its all about having more versatality imo if you want to do well. Look how badly Leona is doing when they make her release ballad after ballad.
That said, I still love ballads. I loved Whitney's latest album, especially I didnt Know my own Strength

Your forgetting how many arena's Celine & Whitney sold out after these albums, that has been a huge success. Mariah however, needs a better record label who can handle her releases better as Obsessed was handled really badly.

I dont think they are past it, as such but i think theres like new generation of diva which new audiences connect with.
Like in the 90s everyone loved Mariah/Whitney/Celine

And the songs they made during their peak are seen as classics by literally everyone.. and younger people like their songs and maybe some of their new stuff too

BUT times have changed and the younger audiences are liking the likes of Beyonce/GaGa/Alicia/Leona/Christina

In maybe a few decades all these ladies wont be as sucessful as they are right now as a new generation has come onto the scene..but the music they make will last.

Its all about making music that stands the test of time, rather than making number one singles of the moment which people will only vaguley remember in 5 years.

I'm a big Mariah fan. I only own her last 3 albums, but I'm thinking about getting more. I own Whitney's last album too. I thought it was really good. If it got to #3 in the UK, she can't be that past it. I don't like Celine. Her voice is amazing, but I just don't like her music. Mariah's problem is that everyone seems to want another TEOM from her.

I agree about the comments regarding Mariah. Plus, the Mimi album wasn't special as people and the sales show it as anyway.

WTF

A Diva, by its original description, was a lady singer with a powerful voice and personality to match. Maria fits this catergory perfectly. Diva used to be (and still is) applied to Shirley Bassey, Barbara Streisand and Diana Ross amongst others.

The term gets used all over the place now, but the nearest we have (IMO) at the moment is Ga Ga, Beyonce and one or two others.

Leona is not a diva-she has a powerful voice-and zero personality.

Alishia would probably not take kindly to being called one.

Diva is also used for camp and over the top male entertainers who also make demands.-so Louise Walsh and Simon Cowell for instance

I think times have moved on now. No-one around now are on the same level vocally as MCV (vocal trinity) were. I think today is more about versatility than vocals. I think the new triniy would be Beyonce, Alicia and Britney.

ummm, id move britney out there and replace with gaga! britneys has shown she no longer has talent as she mimes so i dont think putting her in the top 3 divas of this decade sounds right, whereas gaga has proffessional star written all over her!

The only reason why I haven't put Gaga in there yet is because it is too early to say. She's only been around a year. If she is still on top in 2 years I'd put her in there. Britney has always mimed. Mimming has nothing to do with my trinity as it is more about being an all round performer than having stellar vocals this decade.

In terms of sales, sure. I wouldn't agree in terms of vocal talent, which is why Whitney, Mariah and Celine are grouped together for. If it was sales, Madonna would be there.

I assumed the poster was referring to 'diva' in the sense of having a stunning voice, not just being a female who dance to generic pop songs. Which tbh, I don't see as versatility. Christina and Beyonce are versatile, sure. Alicia, GaGa and Britney I wouldn't call versatile.

I wouldnt call beyonce versatile at all, her singles arent exactly that different, they sound similar whereas gaga has veratility, her album moves from pop to ballad and the fame has some rock in it as well. and also, i wudnt say gagas songs are generic, she struggled to get air play at the beginning becos radio stations werent interested in her electro dance pop sound, so it was obviously different to the norm!
