The NW has had phenomenal success over the 5 seasons of DoI so far.

Contestants with strong NW connections have come top, along with numerous others who've been well placed:

S1) Gaynor Faye from Yorkshire but spent 4 years in Corrie and her partner was Daniel Whiston, from Blackpool.

S2) Kyran Bracken who went to school at Stonyhurst College near Clitheroe, Lancashire.

S3) Suzanne Shaw from Bury.
Runner up: Chris Fountain (Hollyoaks)
3rd: Zaraah Abrahams (Corrie)

S4) Ray Quinn from Liverpool
3rd: Jessica Taylor from Preston
4th: Coleen Nolan from Blackpool

S5) Hayley Tamaddon and Daniel Whiston, both from Blackpool
2nd: Gary Lucy (ex-Hollyoaks)
3rd: Kieron Richardson from Eccles
5th: Danny Young (ex-Corrie)
7th/10th: Emily Atack and Heather Mills, both related to Liverpudlian Paul McCartney

We're more competitive at sports than other regions. Look at the Premier League...

Man Utd
Man City
Liverpool
Everton
Bolton
Blackburn
Burnley
Wigan

8/20 for a very small area is really good going...

If you add in Sunderland and Hull, half of top flight teams are within a 90 mile radius of Leeds!

Although Burnley look likely to drop down they could be replaced by Blackpool who are only just below the Championship play off zone with 6 games to play!

Maybe Hayley and Daniel's triumph last night is a good omen for Ian Holloway's boys!

Well Yorkshire ain't the North West and there are numerous other connections to Yorkshire including Mr Fountain and others' exploits and Bradford...so we do need to expand it to the North but otherwise...agreed! And don't forget the coaching input of Karen and her hubby both from the NW..and Nicky as a judge.

A lot of good posters are from the North West as well, although some people may not think so
The North Rocks.
Quite a few reality shows have had winners from the North West.

Some are even born with skates on and/or footy boots.

I think this is the key. We have a strong loyalty to our roots, which a lot of Southerners don't seem to have.

Of course, being nicer people, and more talented also helps

And interestingly very few have white female winners from the South.....its something to do with who votes or who won't vote for whom?

Yeah, let's make that the North in general, so it includes Yorkshire aka God's own country, not just the North West where those Lancunians live *shudders*

Hadn't spotted the trend but now you point it out, I love it

I'm all in favour of that, as long as Blackpool is the epicentre

I'm with you on that one

I think the DoI success probably has most to do with the number of soaps made in the region

Oh hang on just a minute .. Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Fulham and West Ham are from a much smaller area .. and three of them are in the top four.

Southerners are just as competetive .. take Strictly

Natasha Kaplinsky (Brighton)
Alesha Dixon (Welwyn)
Mark Ramprakash (Bushey)
Chris Hollins (Bromley)

4 out of the 7 winners were from the Southern half of Britain and if you take the Strictly tour winners into account then it's .. 6 out of 10.

Rachel Stevens (London) 2008
Matt Di Angelo (London) 2009

This years results were ...

Chris Hollins (Bromley)
Ricky Whittle (Manchester)
Ali Bastian (Windsor)
Laila Rouass (London)
Natalie Cassidy (London)
Ricky Groves (London)
Jade Johnson (London)
Phil Tuffnell (London)

Northerners are better on ice .. but you'd expect that wouldn't you

But the population of London alone is higher than the whole of the North West.
On top of which, it's a good deal easier for Londoners (or southerners) to take part in a show which is filmed in London every week than it is for the rest of the Country. Just look at the trouble they had getting Ricky Whittle onto Claudia's show each week.

p.s. we Northerners are tough, we always fight back
