Wi-Fi on mobile?
I note the Wi-Fi on my new LG mobile is usually switched on.
Not sure if I need this switched on (only happens when I'm at home and the laptop's VM router is switched on)? I thought SMS and emails on mobiles don't need Wi-Fi enabling as it's all done via satellites? I'm either 1). Wrong or 2). Right please put me right! Thanks |

Satellites have nothing to do with it! The phone signal goes to "cells" (hence the term cellphone) which is a radio receiver operating on on 900 or 1800MHz.
Anywho.. if you're not using Internet etc. on your phone for streaming, turn Wi-Fi off on the handset otherwise it'll cane your battery. |

Thanks but I'm still confused as the internet (BBC News for example "streaming"?) I can view anywhere regardless of whether I'm at home or miles away outside so where does the Wi-Fi come into it?
Sorry to sound so dorky today - must be all this BST nonsense..... |

When you are out and about your mobile is using the mobile network to access the Internet. You should set it up to use your wireless router when you're at home, as you will get faster speeds and won't be using your mobile data allowance up (that's if you have one.. if you haven't then you may be racking up a huge bill!).

Well, mobiles can use a satellite connection in the link from the BSC to BTS, but this is not usual
![]() Your GSM/ 3G/ WiFi are just different ways of your phone connecting to the outside world. WiFi uses a broadband connection which is billed from the provider of the broadband and you will not need a SIM card for this, thogh some phones will not get past the start up screen without a SIM, but that is due to other reasons. With GSM/ 3G you will need a SIM card as this service is provided by your mobile operator and they will bill you accordingly. |

Phones also use satellites for GPS.
