E4 have let go of Friends too soon.

What other repeats could they put there that would average nearly 400k across the hour? Earl can't even manage half that at 7.30.

Maybe The Big Bang Theory but they need to build up a bigger stack of episodes first otherwise it will be too repetitive a cycle.

Sky News doing yet another 'Ash Crisis' special tonight at 8pm, presumably the one last night did reasonably well?

Qualifying much lower than last year, and so are the shares which is a tad surprising.

The race did well though, no doubt helped by a McLaren 1-2. Even though the shares are down again... hmmm. The times they were one were about parallel to last year, the only exception being the race re-run which was on at 14:55 this year instead of the normal 13:00 and clashed with Britain's Got Talent.

Might have beaten Sky1 as that only had about 140k between 8pm and 10pm.

Although Jeremy Thompson is now back at Sky Centre so not sure whether tonight's special will be on location or not like the last.

How I Met Your Mother could do it easily I think. It's effectively Friends for this decade.

The one show seems to have bounced back from last week's disaster...but not for long i suspect.

Glee did amazingly (and deservedly) well on E4 yesterday. Cleveland obviously gets a boost from it, doing well.

Trauma is bombing on both sides of the atlantic.

Is AusNTM really doing that bad?? That seems terrible for Living.

Last week wasn't a disaster, just slightly down on its usual performance. It still had a solid ~20% share though:

And yesterday it had 4.8m (23.4%).

Well the majority of other digital channels in my post had above 150,000 so I'd say its poor.

Just been having a look at the final BARB figures for we 11th April. The large timeshifts for Dr Who and ATA have been noted by others - but Outnumbered surely deserves a mention with a final figure of 6.7m

HIGNFY at 6m also needs noting - so the Thursday move for both gets off to resounding success.

Also worth noting that Waterloo Road got 5.13m and Casualty 6.33m - both reasonably healthy figures - to say they get so much critism on here.

There's too much emphasis on the overnights in this thread. Yes, they're fun and instant, but they're only half the story. It's like doing a thread about the pop charts and harping on and on about everybody's position in the midweek chart.

It might be different for commercial TV, worrying that timeshift viewers will skip the adverts that earn them their revenue, but that doesn't affect the BBC. They won't care how people watch their programmes just as long as they do. So the officials are the charts that matter to them. And they're the ones that matter to me as well.


Edit: Just noticed the official audience for the Masterchef final - 6.13m. Impressive. Was going to say it justifies the programme's promotion to BBC1 until I checked last year's BBC2 figure - 5.58m. So not that much higher on the bigger channel.

Because overnights come out 7 times a week, and officials come out once a week?

Ouch, but I don't think the scheduling of Comedy Lab across a single week is the best idea. Would be better in a weekly slot, and perhaps even on E4.


They'll have 48 hours of Glee by the time they lose Friends.


Repetitive - it is replacing Friends you know. If they don't go quite as mad as with Friends and only schedule one episode a day, rather than two, and preferbly only repeat on weekdays too, it would probably take them just as long to get through the episodes of the Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother etc. as it did for Friends.

It will serve E4 right though if they struggle without it - they've had the opportunity for years to scale back their reliance on Friends and instead of the double episodes try pairing other series with them in the 5pm/8pm hour, but instead just stuck with Friends.


Personally I think they might move Scrubs to at least one of the Friends slots, and then perhaps shows like Glee will take the 6pm hour.

The overnights for Masterchef on BBC One was 5.6m whereas The previous series overnight was 5.2m so the increase isn't much compared to other shows but it has room for growth IMO but don't do the 90 minute episode because that was repetitive and I'm a fan.

I'm not referring to the amount of posts. I was referring to (and I admit I didn't explain myself properly) the people who quote the overnights as "proof" that a programme has flopped. For instance, Ashes To Ashes takes under 5m in the overnights, which some people herald as a disaster, but it ends up with close to 6m in the officials which is a decent figure - 11th most popular BBC1 programme, equivalent of 17th most popular ITV1 programme (remembering that 11 of the 16 higher rated ITV1 shows are Corrie and Emmerdale:yawn.

Masterchef is up on a whole 20% since its move to BBC one, the first series of the Apprentice on BBC one grew 25%.[ according to RZT]

The 2009 finale , I doubt was up against Man U crashing out of the champions league.

I think BBC One will consider Masterchef to have done a good job - though, of course, its really hurt BBC Two and hasn't done all that much for the show itself. All in all, I wouldn't say it was particularly worth it. But obviously, the needs of BBC One seem to outweigh everything else...

Such a pity to see a good show do so awful. Heard some promo for this on Absolute Radio, and I'd have thought Tina Fey being plastered everywhere for promo of her film might have given it a boost too.

I don't disagree, but I don't think you're going to get everyone to say "I'll wait until the officials before declaring whether it flopped or not".

In terms of Glee moving to Sky1, I don’t think it will. Sadly, I do suspect that it might not last. There is a limit to what they can do with it. Also, I wouldn’t worry too much about the FOX connection. FOX only sold Modern Family to Sky1 this season while Glee and The Cleveland Show both went to E4 not to mention the deal for How I Met Your Mother. The only time that Sky1 actually poached a FOX show was Prison Break (House is broadcast on FOX but actually produced by Universal Media Studios).

I don’t think there was ever any problem with E4 having Friends at 8pm. No, it wasn’t imaginative, but 8pm is a tricky hour and Friends was a consistent performer there. With over 200 episodes, it had enough to sustain a decent run and fill the entire 8pm hour. I think the fact it was always on at 8pm helped. People weren’t watching every night, but if they were in front of the TV and couldn’t find anything to watch, you always knew Friends was there!

The Big Bang Theory doesn’t have enough to fill the gap alone so they’re probably going to have to look at some sort of combination of it, How I Met Your Mother and Scrubs. I’m surprised that they didn’t go for Modern Family or Cougar Town. All the US networks are likely to commission new sitcoms this year so I’m sure they’ll keep an eye out. With Hollyoaks quite possibly off the air by the time Friends goes, they’re going to have even more time to fill.
