BBC Two has weathered losing past hits, it would be worse if they lost Top Gear, Mock the Week or Dragons Den to BBC One. IMO Miranda's the only show that could transfer to BBC One but we'll have to wait and see how Series 2 does first.

I hope ITV bid for Glee, it's perfect post-X Factor viewing on Sunday nights.

I think it could turn into a massive hit for them, perhaps 5m+ on a regular basis, even more...with a great 16-34 audience...

But, Sky will probably bid more...

has BBC 2/4 still got Jack Dee sitcom, Lead Balloon?

Sitcoms and comedy dramas seem to have made a comeback in recent years after drama and reality dominating the schedules, I wonder if it is the sign of the times or just a trend.

Speaking of Glee, I wonder when the cast or least Lea Michele, Cory Monleith, Matthew Morrison or Jane Lynch will appear on the UK chatshow or radio circuit, I think filming has prevented them coming and the upcoming tour but I'm sure if they will come eventually.

Comedy Central have really been plugging it and earlier this year it had a lead-in from Two and a Half Men as well (500,000 viewers) but it just doesn't seem to be working.

Friends is a big investment for them but it'll be a blow if Two and a Half Men does end.

30 Rock although funny isn't as accessible compared to Friends, Two and a Half or The Office as we don't have a SNL type show over here.

Two and a Half Men's future does look shaky but I think CBS and Warner Bros will pay Charlie Sheen $1m an episode and the show ends on a high after eight seasons in 2011.

Certainly with sitcoms, I think it was inevitable with the recession although nobody in the UK really seemed to make much of an effort (the 30 minute sitcom is very nearly dead here).

Going into next season, it seems likely that the US will have comedy on Tuesday, completing a comedy line-up from Sunday-Thursday. The only question is who is going to go for it. FOX seem most likely to attempt some live action comedy but some rescheduling could see ABC or NBC move into Tuesday nights as well. Particularly as Idol isn't likely to be terrifying schedulers like it used to (Modern Family has performed admirably against Idol).


They'd make excellent guests on Britain's Got Talent but I'm not sure it will happen. The tour finishes a week before and BGT finals week coincides with the last week of Glee in the US (and FOX may want them around).

Of course there is, but then again, I doubt Glee will go to Sky. American Idol, FOX's biggest show and allegedly the world's biggest show is still on ITV2.

American Idol is produced and distributed by FremantleMedia and not 20th Century Fox Television like Glee and the shows listed above.

I'm sure there is some relationship, but I don't think it's all that special.

FOX needs live action comedies as they haven't had success with them since Malcolm in the Middle. The animated block has done well but I think we could see American Dad! getting axed or reduced to 13 episodes if Bob's Burgers does well. Only FOX has managed to make animated comedies work in primetime, the only exceptions in recent years are the Adult Swim shows and South Park, MTV had success in the 90s with Beavis and Butthead, Daria and Celebrity Deathmatch.

CBS has had success with the Monday Night block but less so the Wednesday comedy hour so I think the Wednesday comedies will be axed or the block moves to another night. ABC have done well with Modern Family, The Middle and to an extent Cougar Town. NBC has already renewed the Thursday comedies so I think they will also expand to another night.

ABC have done fairly well, but their schedule doesn't fit that well, IMO. Modern Family & Cougar Town don't complement each other. Modern Family should really be with The Middle and Matthew Perry's new show will most likely be paired with Cougar Town. I'd have:

Wednesdays:
8pm - Modern Family
8.30pm - The Middle
9pm - Mr Sunshine
9.30pm - Cougar Town
10pm - Brothers & Sisters

However, if ABC want to keep Modern Family at 9pm, then I could see them having:

Tuesdays:
8pm - Dancing With The Stars
9pm - Cougar Town
9.30pm - Mr Sunshine

Wednesdays:
2 new sitcoms to go with The Middle and Modern Family (which stays at 9pm).

On the subject of ABC sitcoms, Romantically Challenged stated last night with a 3.1 rating (likely to be revised down). That's decent but it was a premiere airing after DWTS and it's similar to Surviving Suburbia which premiere in that slot last year and only lasted a few months. Obviously if that is a hit then it could join the comedy block but I'm not sure that it will make it to next season.

It's all comparative though - we're generally judging overnight figures now on how it's performed in the overnights in the past.


When the ash cloud finally subsides perhaps - so sometime around series 3!

C4 though is seriously lacking opportunities for self promotion when it comes to interviews now. Only T4 is a regular in the schedule, though I guess they could go on Freshly Squeezed - but nobody would notice! They've got Alan Carr's chat show I suppose, and the new Paul O'Grady Show without Paul O'Grady, but both are only on for a few months of the year.

When they still had Richard and Judy around alternating with Paul O'Grady they had a flagship show to put guests on virtually all year round.

Thinking back, there has almost a conveyor belt of defections to ITV each usurping the other. Bob Wilson who was sidelined by Des Lynam who made way for Steve Rider who is now instantly in the shade of new golden boy Chiles. (See you on ITV4 Steve-actually probably not in my case)
Chiles has seemingly been at the BBC since 1993 having had a long and very successful career in radio. It puts it even more in perspective that after that long apprenticeship and at the point where he is arguably a star............... he joins ITV.
As for presenters, well I can see a time (and I reckon it is secret policy now at the Beeb) when Nick Knowles presents absolutely everything there is to present.


NB-ITV should attempt to grab Nick Knowles-the BBC would then be utterly destroyed!

haha!! Nick Knowles was a second rate DIY show presenter at that, let alone being put on big shows that the BBC thinks his good at!!

DWTS is down from last week in terms of 18-49 demo, despite rising a bit in total viewers. Romantically Challenged started solid, although 2.9 worries me as it was adjusted down from 3.1 in overnights. Castle took a hit but held up decently. Having said that, it was second to a new CSI: Miami.

8:30pm - Rules of Engagement - 7.490 million (3.0/8)
10pm - CSI: Miami - 11.661 million (3.2/9)

All decent numbers. CSI: Miami numbers are not as great as any previous seasons, even though it won the slot.

But ITV should have been on the ball from the start, realised that and bid competitively against Channel 4.

If they had put Glee on at 9pm, after Britain's Got Talent and got the promotion right they could have run the first half of the season to huge audiences, particularly in the key demo and made themselves a ton of money.

Then the second half could have run around X Factor and made them even more.

Obviously a long term goal would then be to catch up the US, but too many episodes is quite a good problem to have.

The amount of press the show has created this week is amazing - I even saw it on the front page of a tabloid.

Well, I'm watching at FOX pace and it was the Madonna episode, it should great amazingly as it was a good, if cheesy, episode:



BTW, on FOX, American Idol ran over by 03:03 minutes.

Exactly, shows like this and, to a lesser extent, High School Musical and Hannah Montana, have the power of bringing really big young audiences in.

For ITV, surely having Simon Cowell's talent shows in a Sunday 8pm slot is inspiration enough to have shows like Glee at 9pm.

Britannia High obviously didn't work, but was really secluded in a 6/7pm slot in a Sunday evening, much like the new series of 'Survival' is...that slot just isn't a great slot for anything apart from the soaps or light entertainment on Sunday evening.

Another US show ITV need to think about investing in is Modern Family, as it's certainly something that would relate well to British audiences, and could be placed alongside a panel show/sitcom of its own in a comedy zone.

Thinking back to last year, ITV's comedy zone wasn't as much of a failure as one would think - given that they've never done it before. Apart from Moving Wallpaper/Echo Beach, which was a bit out of mainstream anyway, Teenage Kicks (despite being terrible) held an OK audience alongside Benidorm - and that was on a Friday.

So, Thursday 9, 9:30pm, or even Tuesday 9, 9:30pm could be the new place for comedy.

I thought he built the set for the first Prime Ministers Debate.
