Very poor night all round but then it was a lot of crap.

Glee and E4 are a perfect fit - Glee and ITV1 isn't - indeed ITV1 and any US import struggles.


If ITV had got the rights at best it would have been ITV2 where it may or may not have done as well on E4 (it would probably get bumped around for the latest episodes of the Slapper Show).

If it had gone on ITV1 there is no way it would have got a plum slot after The X Factor or BGT - it would have ended up filling one of the tricky slots, so end up either on Fridays or Tuesdays likely, and then probably wouldn't have broken the 4m barrier anyway - so would just go down as another ITV flop. Even if it followed BGT in the Saturday slot it probably wouldn't make a difference as we saw with The Prisoner.


Some shows just have a natural home, and as soon as Glee debuted in the US most people seemed to think E4 would be the best place for it - and that has well and truly turned out to be the case.


P.S. These figures next to impossible I imagine to get, but would be interesting to see if the ITV Morning News has seen a jump in ratings this week with potential flyers wanting to get the latest on the airport situation.

But ITV needs to lost this image it has of itself, because its not working for them at the moment.

Why can't ITV show a good, young US drama in primetime or a good quality US comedy in primetime?

They need to start behaving like a normal commercial broadcaster anywhere else in the World and stop trying to be a low budget BBC1. They have to ruthlessly commercial, finding the cheapest, highest quality, biggest profit making shows they can.

Because what works in other countries doesn't necessarily work for ITV. Virtually everything they've tried for a younger audience in recent years just hasn't worked, yet time and time again the more traditional older skewing shows pull in the ratings. The ITV audience also has a very different attitude to US imports than the C4/E4 audience, and they simply can't get away with plugging holes in the schedules with imported shows, however good they are.


I'm not sure too how valuable the younger, presumably skewed female demographic Glee attracts would be to ITV too. It may not seem more commercially attractive but it's possibly more profitable to ITV to get the more male skewed audience cheap fillers like Cops with Cameras bring in.

What about The X Factor? Surely that's quite young skewing and the show itself is based on young singers being successful...

So, I don't get your argument here...16-34 audience is very valuable for ITV, indispensable infact, and The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent fetch millions of that age bracket potentially in the Sunday 8pm slot - a perfect lead-in for something like Glee.

It gives ITV a great platform in which it can launch new shows, the only problem being: ITV have been launching shows after Coronation Street on weekdays, and Pushing Daisies in a summer Saturday night slot, albeit to a launch of nearly 6 million viewers, despite it being a little off-mainstream.

Look, stuff like The Palace, Rock Rivals and M,S,O were all hidden away from young audiences in my opinion, because they don't expect any young/vibrant shows on weekdays...but at weekends they do...that's a fact.

And, even Married, Single, Other was being discussed by males and females from my Sixth Form, unlike anything else (with the small exception to Britannia High) drama-wise ITV has done in years. Moving Wallpaper also got feathers ruffled - but its Friday night slot and being coupled with Echo Beach didn't help it.

Also, Harry Hill is a big young ratings puller, along with Take Me Out...

2m on E4 on a Tuesday night and headlines of "Greatest hit of all time"

Why do we assume 2m teenagers cant operate a remote?

Well, E4 is a freeview channel and it's more likely that double the audience will tune in for Glee if it was given an X Factor lead-in. Plus, ITV is capable of 10m+ audiences.

So, there's no excuses on ITV's part at all, you shouldn't defend them..

Viewers also watch the repeats on 4OD and good figures on +1....on ITV, which wants viewers to watch live broadcasts, I'm thinking 4m+ at the least following X Factor.

I take it Sky1's Ross Kemp doc on the Amazon didn't rate very well. Not in the multi-channel top 11 anyway.

If I wanted to watch Glee I know where it is and can already watch it. I dont need an X Factor lead in. These shows have a good but limited appeal so niche channels and not mass market channels are the place for them.

Speaking of Glee, in the US last night it scored 13.50m viewers and 5.4 demo rating. Down slightly from last week's 13.63 million viewers and a 5.6 demo rating.

In one of the more interesting bits of scheduling, Luther takes the Tuesday slot from 4th May for 6 weeks, running until 8th June - meaning that Episode #5 will be against Britain's Got Talent. Why Tuesday though? Drama very clearly doesn't do well on Tuesdays any more for whatever reason - unless BBC expect it to flop?

A documentary, Modern Masters starts on BBC One on Sunday 2nd May for 4 weeks.

Also, Election Night has Outnumbered at 21:25, with the Election coverage starting "from 21:55".

ITV Press Office has updated, and it sees the return of the Sunday episode of Coronation Street on May 2nd at 20:00 with Lewis starting at 20:30. A new episode of Midsomer Murders is on May 5th at 20:00, while ITV's Election Coverage also starts at 21:55.

I think we might see Coronation Street going six episodes a week in May so that it can go for a 'break' for a week during the World Cup.

Oh, Sky News are having a debate then are they. Funny, they haven't mentioned it - well, not in the last 30 seconds anyway.


They can, and that's the point. Older viewers may need to be spoonfed their TV by putting it in the heart of the BBC1/ITV1 schedules, but younger viewers are happy to go out and find it - and for programmes like Glee will always be much more likely to be looking for such shows in the E4 schedules than in the ITV1 schedules.


The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent are completely different to Glee when talking about ITV1. ITV1 have a long history in producing such Saturday night shows, but have virtually no history in both teen drama and, in the last 15-20 years or so, airing US shows in peak time. Scheduling isn't just about putting a show in the schedule and hoping for the best - we're seeing evidence week after week that as far as ITV is concerned, a 8-10m inheritance means **** all for the show that follows it.

Looks like EastEnders' ratings are picking up following a couple of below-par weeks. Emmerdale was nicely up from last week as well. The usual story really: solid evening for BBC1, poor for ITV1. I was expecting more from Millionaire and The Bill as Children's Hospital was back at 7:30pm and must've rated at least a million higher than last week's Tonight edition, thus providing a better lead-in.

Delicious Miss Dahl has lost viewers every single week, which is quite rare to see from a BBC2 show. CSI's still well down from last year's equivalent figures and it's quite clear to see that the franchise is nearing the end of its shelf life due to declining ratings in the US as well - it'll be interesting to see how Five copes when the CSI shows end. It's a pity that they didn't get the NCIS: LA rights as I imagine it would've done well. Not watched either of these two shows but Castle and Criminal Minds seem to rate well in the US and aren't on terrestrial TV over here (I think), so perhaps Five could try to get those two shows especially since CM also has a spin-off in the making.


They left it a bit too late for Luther. It could've started a couple of weeks ago in a Monday slot and done really well against Joanna Lumley's Nile. Maybe what made the BBC choose Tuesday for it rather than Monday is that had it been scheduled on a Monday, the 4th episode would clashed against an England match. So they would've had 2 weeks in a row up against difficult competition. Given the circumstances, personally I'd have scheduled two episodes a week on Mondays and Tuesdays for three weeks - that way it would avoid clashing against the England match and BGT, and also done pretty well for at least the Monday episodes.

Sky News' Debate studio... a bit small! Looks incredibly small, and not much room for the three to move a little bit to get their point across.
