Also worthy of note, The Big Bang Theory had a 4.1 rating for a repeat on Monday night. Not only did it beat ABC's new sitcom in that half hour but it comfortably beat 24 and matched a new episode of House. It's only 20% lower than new episodes have been getting and the highest rated repeat for more than 2 years.

Tonight is Idol Gives Back, returning after a one year hiatus caused by the recession. The show will incorporate an elimination but it's just a small part of the 2 hour show that will include performances from Elton John, Alicia Keys and Idol golden girl, Carrie Underwood. Annie Lennox (a regular at this and managed by Simon Fuller) pulled out due to the flight chaos. Fuller promised "something quite incredible" from Bill & Melinda Gates at a press conference on Monday.

Oh dear for V. I can see a series finale happening in May instead of season finale. It will be interesting to see Glee's final numbers since Idol overran for FOUR minutes! Then again, TVbytheNumbers says it finished at 10:04pm, so it might not make that much difference. I am wondering how DWTS will perform in the ratings next Monday and Tuesday now that
Spoiler
Kate is eliminated.
I'm sure it will do fine, but it will be quite interesting.

The international interest in the debates in quite, well, interesting. For example last week's debate was shown the morning after on Norwegian public television and as we can see from that list, this week's will be shown internationally through Al Jazeera. UK politics does seem to cause some interest across Europe which has always surprised me.

CBS have been in repeats a lot for the last few weeks, I would have thought they could order additional episodes or air more specials to cover the gaps, the Sunday lineup usually has awards ceremonies and Hallmark and Jesse Stone movies.

The Big Bang Theory has become a hit for CBS, I think it will replace TAAAHM should Charlie Sheen quit.

BBC Three seems to do well with animated films, even if they are shown at 10:30pm. The viewing public is so amazing sometimes.

Glad to see Sky News performing better than at the weekend where it got quite a beating, their coverage in the last few days deserves good ratings IMO.

At least they know the competition is going to be very poor. I think the "Tuesdays don't rate well" thing could become a bit of a self-fufilling prophecy. On ITV, it makes sense as its the only night (minus 'event' Wednesdays) not propped up by Corrie. On the face of it, though, Tuesdays should be strong for the BBC with a handy 5-6m Holby inheritance. I guess this move puts that to the test.

V looks like a goner in the States. It's clinging on to decent figures, but for a serialised drama which had such a massive promotional push and has constantly lost viewers, it's not doing well enough to justify an expensive risk on a second season.

On the other hand, Parenthood has been a desperately needed moderate success for NBC. Its retention from TBL has been consistent and it deserves that second season and a chance to grow.

Glee did brilliantly out of Idol again and seems to be established as the biggest drama on US TV right now (in the demos, at least). Idol itself seems to have lost an awful lot of momentum over the course of this series. I know the season average so far holds up OK in comparison to last year, but the trend must be causing some concern. Cowell's departure will make things much worse next year (worse, I think, than many in the US realise) - the question is whether XF will replace it as a monster hit.

It seems as though ITV have abandoned Monday drama so the BBC have too. Why Ashes to Ashes was not on Mondays to be followed by Luther I just dont know.

Not listed on that link but CNNI are showing it too. BBC World News showed the first one so maybe they will show this one as well. Either way at least 2 of the big 3 international news channels will have it live

Just need Russia Today to show it then all of the freeview news channels (Im not counting Sky Sports News here) will have it

I think that's the likely move. If TAAHM stays, CBS have quite tough decisions to make. They have a few hot comedy pilots that they probably want to order but might not have room for, especially if they axe the Wednesday block.

It got a boost from the announcement at the start and then Ellen's arrival but in the past 10 Tuesday shows, only 1 has improved week to week.

The talent isn't great, the results shows are very dull, Ellen hasn't made a huge impression and obviously attention keeps drifting to the fact that Simon is quitting.

One interesting aspect is that Idol has a season average 8.0 target among adults 18-49. It's above that just now (thanks to auditions) but the cushion is slipping away rapidly and it may not make that target which means it won't get an automatic renewal as expected. Obviously it will still be renewed, but FOX might manage to use the uncertainty push the price down significantly and attach tougher targets to future series to minimise their exposure should Idol struggle without Cowell.

The Wednesday block is a goner and I think it would be easier to be a drama or a reality show and have comedy say on Sunday followed by Amazing Race/Undercover Boss and a drama.

I don't think TAAHM will go this year though, CBS and Warner Bros make too much money from it in syndication for them to let it go yet, pay Charlie Sheen the money and end it on a high like they did with Friends.

Digiguide just updated, looks like Luther is Tuesday (only one episode it would seem, take that BBC Press Office) but for me that means a clash between CSI, Luther & The Bill.

Would anyone like to tell me it will move to Monday the next week, and its only on Tuesday the first week due to it being a Bank Holiday the day before

”

Collision, Five Days and Torchwood all had very good ratings on Tuesdays.

Weekly dramas don't do well on Tuesdays because...

a) that's where ITV1 now send their dramas to die - their flopzone (just like BBC1 used to send their weak dramas to die on a Wednesday, a scheduling practice that went right back to the 1980s, if not the 1970s.)

and b) that's where BBC1 sent their weaker dramas to be propped up against ITV1's flopzone.

Survivors, Paradox and The Fixer flopped because they were all so far up their own backsides. Worthy but dull - and viewer unfriendly.

And The Bill has simply been abandoned by the viewers for whatever reason. If it can't get viewers on a Thursday with a Corrie lead-in, it's not going to get viewers on a Tuesday without. Which is fine by ITV1. They hardly want an axed programme to start soaring in the ratings.

Judging from the clips, I'm not sure Luther is capable of getting big ratings. That might explain the scheduling - to prop it up against the ITV1 flopzone. Although that doesn't necessarily mean it won't enjoy critical success (unlike Survivors and Paradox.)

Adrian's last One Show is "believed to be" a week on Friday.

Ben Shepherd's contract at GMTV ends on the same day, but he had volunteered to stay while they found someone else, something that may or may not be needed now, depending on when they want Adrian to appear.

If I were ITV I'd leave it until after South Africa now and retool the show for his return.

Not ratings related but History in America have commissioned Top Gear America which will premiere in the Autumn, it will be interesting how it does as Top Gear Australia wasn't as successful. Not sure what cars have to with History but then this is a channel that shows Ice Road Truckers and Ax Men.

Conscience that they both end next friday!

I would do the same. Adrian woul be in SA on and off till July .Although would they save Adrain till September ( for some reason TV shows like to relaunch in September - start of the new season i suppose.) Likely I think that it will, as there's lots of changes.

In other news

Katie Derham leaving ITN for BBC
Quote:
“The ITV newsreader Katie Derham is leaving to join the BBC.

It is understood that Derham, who began her broadcasting career at the corporation, will front the BBC's coverage of the Proms for BBC2 and Radio 3. A spokesman for Radio 3 confirmed the appointment but declined to give any further details......... Derham's appointment is expected to be confirmed tomorrow. Staff at ITV News producer ITN were told about the move earlier today.http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2010...derham-itn-bbc”

Shame really liked Katie.

All change in the last few days!!

Katie Derham is a great presenter and good choice for the Proms as she does presenting on Classic FM so Radio 3 is a natural home for her on radio. She and Alastair Stewart were always part of London Tonight and it was more light hearted compared to ITV News.

Shame Katie is leaving ITN but really a surprise she stuck around so long considering she was repeatedly looked over for the top jobs.

I can't see Adrian joining GMTV until September - or at the earliest a couple of weeks after the World Cup. That said though, he is pretty much a rarity in TV in being someone who seems to like working a 5-day week, so if he had his way perhaps he will join sooner rather than later - and also TV shows have an annoying habit of doing relaunches in stages rather than one big change all at once.

Wonder how low tonight's football will go for ITV. I'm thinking it'll just about break the 3m barrier.

Television tonight isn't great, there's a Bang Goes The Theory special which will flop, I can see NCIS, Jamie does.... and Monty Halls getting increases tonight. Actually I think Five's lineup will do well with the Ispwich Murders doc at 8pm and The Volcano Ash documentary.

Lastnights game got 825k on Sky so ITV should be good for about 3.5m

Looking ahead to election week and C4 have three Bremner, Bird and Fortune specials from Sunday to Tuesday, premiering on More4 at 9pm with a C4 repeat at 11pm - so be interesting to see how the ratings compare there as I've always thought considering the unfavourable slots it has on C4 that premiering Rory Bremner's shows on More4 would make sense.

And their Alternative Election Night coverage gets a head start on the BBC and ITV by airing from 9pm.

Really intrigued to see how the debate performs across the various channels tomorrow. In typical understated style they are currently doing a light show on the outside of the building on Sky News.

The Irish media are reporting that The Silence will air on BBC 1 from Monday 10 May. It looks right as the Press pack was issued a couple of days ago.
