But what if Brown flips? You cant rule out the possibility that there will be a punch up

Surely it's more likely that he'll send Cameron and Clegg into a coma. That's if Clegg manages to get past security.

That's very high ! Debates have done well in other countries recently, so maybe they've loosely been basing their odds on that?

USA ('08): 63.2m, France ('07): 20.1m, Australia ('07): 2.4m

Those three ratings include simulcasts (many in the USA, and 2 channels aired the Fr./Oz debates at the same time). Those debates were one of the top 3 most watched programmes of the year in their respective countries, I think.

Paddy Power also has the BBC debate as the favourite to pull in the most viewers at 1/2. ITV are 6/4.”

If I remember correctly, one of the debates for the 2008 Spanish general election became one of, if not THE most watched TV show in Spanish TV history (knocking eurovision 2002 off the top spot which had 12.7m viewers), I can't remember the ratings for the debate but it was higher than 12m. I'm really intruigued about how high the ratings will go for our debates, particularly the final one.

I'll try and find the Spanish ratings.

ITV got the first debate as decided by the toss of a coin, as just confirmed by a very interesting documentary on BBC2 earlier this evening.

It makes sense for them to go first - that will most likely get highest ratings.

The BBC wants the biggest one and failing the first, they get the last one - the one where they get the last chance before the election to change things.

Sky want to show people they are a big player and not just a sideshow - if they went 1st or last people would talk about it being the small pre-show or post-show debate, they are bang in the centre now.”

Nope they drew lots for them.

They can't really toss a coin when there's three of them.

Yes it was very good, it was also revealed in the press release the broadcasters put out in March.

You can flip a coin more than once.

The programme definitely said "by the flip of a coin". It's on iPlayer. I suppose it amounts to the same thing. Not that it really matters - our point is the same and I'm just being pedantic.

According to BBC News, the Spanish debate had 11.7m: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7276338.stm

The German one last year had 14.2m, which is also high. They seem to rate really well in other countries from the ratings I've seen, but it might be a completely different case over here!

Well done for finding the Spanish rating, I was having no look. So it wasn't the highest ever but very close. I had a feeling it was very high.

The really interesting thing about the debates is just what the other channels can/dare to schedule against them.

I expect the first one may start reasonably well in terms of ratings but when the audience realise what a bore fest they are with the format imposed I cant see them doing that well.

Furthermore, I'm not sure what on earth the BBC could air opposite them, and even opposite their own debate! It could be Total Disaster for the BBC if BBC One beats ITV1 during the debate in the eyes of some.

Also. Are any of these debates being broadcast internationally?

BBC1 going with their normal Thursday schedule

8.00 DIY SOS (which would under normal circumstances play against Emmerdale and Corrie)
9.00 Have I Got News For You
9.30 Outnumbered.

And the BBC can't be held responsible if more people opt to watch some quality comedy ahead of 3 patronising, condenscending idiots spouting a load of well-rehearsed but meaniless sound bites (I think the election debate will win, but I hope it doesn't.)

Quite happy about this 2 good shows to watch while the drivel is on - I too would love the debates to absolutely bomb.

They do it all the time with Sky1 - "exclusive to Sky1 HD", which of course it isn't!

Are they still showing it on CITV. Talking of which, note now that CBBC is showing Total Wipeout too.

I wouldnt be surprised if there was a mass switch over to BBC1 at 9pm. People tuning in for the debate might watch the first 30 minutes and think its very dull thus decide to watch HIGNFY instead.
