If i put a Virgin sim in my unlocked and unbranded N95 it shows up as T-Mobile UK why is this?

I know its cause Virgin uses T-Mobile but i got some phones older than the N95 and those show Virgin instead?

I have a cheap (back-up) lg phone which is locked to T-mobile, but found I could use my virgin mobile simcard in it (albeit with T-mobile written on the display)

It depends whether the handset takes the name of the service provider from its own database or from the display name stored on the SIM. Its not to do with the age of the phone.

There are pros and cons to both methods.

My HTC Touch says "vodafone UK" when I put an Asda SIM in. Asda use Vodafone's network so there's clear possibilities of things like that happening.

Got SIMs of the other main networks too, but I lost my charger for my n95 and it has just sat there as a spare for a while now, so I can't test them on that.

If the phone was T mobile branded when you got it there's a chance that has something to do with it only showing T mobile as the network name. One of my old phones used to only show "one2one" on the screen with a T mobile simcard inside.

As I said, it depends whether the handset looks up the network name on its own database or reads it from the SIM.
