I've just read today that Universal are going to start protecting all of their releases from next year, and that the other BIG 4 will soon be doing the same.

Just something else for us to hack!

I'll give it three months before the discs are playable through CD-Roms.

Is this the same thing as described here; Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI).

A bit like the original DVD algorithm debate and will be a challenge to all the other millions of hackers even if the professor does not publish his work. I assume you can copy them on a computer even if you cannot play them?

Regards

there really isnt any point in them doing this at all

you could just plug the line out of your stereo straight into your soundcards line in socket and save the wav file, then convert it to an mp3 as usual

new forms of protection are being released within the next 90 days.
I reckon the crackers will soon break the protection. They always have and always will, it just makes things harder for ordinary people to do it.

If you record it that way and convert it to MP3 the sound quality will most liley be awful. It'll be a bad analogue conversion rather than a pure digital copy. Then people searching for it will get bad analogue versions rather than digital ones. It needs to be hacked.

i have the same problem with Ash - Free All Angels. the only way to play them on the PC is through the CD-Rom thing on the cd so it is useless with Winamp and Audiograbber

Rather than copying the CD via the line in, couldn't you do it via a Mini Disc?

CD stereo through optical to Minidisc, and then Minidisc to PC through an optical connector. It's a long way of doing it, but it's digital all the way.

There's always a way.

I would do it like this:

CD analogue out (or digital optical) into my MD deck, then out of the digital coax output into my SBLive digital input.

Voila!!!

Okay so we won't be able to rip a disc in a couple of minutes but so what?

A lot of the MP3s I download are broken up & jumpy (even phase reversed!!) anyway - the average punter couldn't make a decent MP3 to save their life.

Anyone an idea if these new screwed up CD's will output from the SPDIF output of a normal CD Rom in a PC?

If so, then its a simple job to do it digitally using the same error correction in the PC CD Rom as that in the domestic player..

Once the Hi-Fi buyer finds that the CD;s are being deliberately buggered, even IF the difference is to unheard? they will soon stop buying, which is what we all should do, of course I shall not be buying anyway, can't stand the white tinted re-built thing called jackson anyway?

Mike.
