USB is a standard which can come with ports of different shapes and sizes E.g. A, B, mini-usb, micro-USB.

Micro-USB is one particular shape and size for the port and plug. It can carry data and charge phones. It is good because majority of phone manufacturers have agreed to all use micro-USB for phones in the future. I.e. you will only need the one micro-USB cable or charger that will be compatible with all your household's different phones.

Yes. I do this with my Nokia N85 (one of the first mobiles to get micro USB since Nokia agreed to the standard i believe). The idea is that in the future manufacturers will only sell phones without chargers included which will save money and packaging, as well as reduce waste. However i don't expect to see a reduction in the price of a mobile without a charger compared to one with a charger, or maybe that's just me being synical.

Even if the price doesn't decrease much, you'll only need one cable in the house for everyone and if the charger gets lost/forgotten, new ones should be cheap. Currently most only work with a few handsets and are harder to find (have to use eBay or something) and more expensive.
