This may be a little late in the day but...
I disagree completely. I think that that term sexual abuse is being used a little worryingly for me. We react the way we do because we understand Syed, we are biased towards him. It’s only natural. But I would never go as far as to describe Zainab’s actions as a form of sexual abuse.
If I’m going to be completely critical of Syed, and I’m a Syed-girl so it’s coming from a place of love, then by marrying Amira, he’s laid his own bed and must now lie in it. If we continue down this route, then Syed would also be guilty of abuse but in the emotional sense to Amira. By marrying her and not being intimate with her, he would have, and indeed was, caused her emotional stress about her self-worth.
The point I’m trying to make is that context is everything. Zainab is doing this because she believes that if Syed ‘tries’ it, he might like it. That does not make her an abuser in my books. Deluded, yes, but never a perpetrator of sexual abuse. Not once has she held a gun to Syed’s head to have sex with Amira. Syed can tell Amira to piss off regardless of what fancy toys she brings, and we know he rejects her.
Also, after the ‘physically sick’ line, Syed then turned around and had sex with Amira. In Zainab’s eyes, he has given a clear indication that he can ‘do it’. So for her, she probably thinks with a little direction here and there he will eventually come to love it.
