Thinkinking of maybe joining a choir - what should I sing?
I'm not sure where exactly to post this
But after I sang songs at my recital last Friday (some folk stuff by The Seekers and John Denver, and also Somewhere and Bridge Over Troubled Water ) I found about something in my town called "Rock Choir" who sing all sorts of modern music apparently. I was thinking of going along and trying it, to see whats its like But I havent really got much of an idea what to sing or what it will be like.I think the recital went well, I liked both sorts of numbers As some may know, I'm a great admirer of Judith Durham and her voice.Surprised I could sing Somewhere !

I'd give 'I'm a Firestarter' a miss.

Sweet Child of Mine.
As per version performed in Step Brothers. Perhaps pre-record the harmony and get them to play it as your backing track. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tm2Jy64b0dI Good luck. |

I used to go to Rock Choir!
![]() I left because of needing to find a residential college placement, but generally had a fab time there. I was about 16 at the time, and I'm female, but I was a bass, because I have qite a low voice for a girl and not many guys were in the 10-21s choir ![]() I auditioned for a few solos, but although the instructor said I had one of the best voices in the choir, I didn't get any. I don't know if that's because I hadn't been there long enough, or because I'm visually impaired, have very poor co-ordination and struggled with the dance routines. I always got the impression that was a major factor - but in other ways my disability was catered for. I always had other members keeping an eye on me and helping me with the moves ![]() Anyway, that's a bit of background....you don't actually have to audition to join RC, but you'll end up singing a range of contemporary pop and rock songs. Good luck - enjoy! ![]() xxxx |

Thanks!
I don't know what kind of voice I have TBH, but I'll go along to the taster session first. I know BOTW can be done as a gospel, look at Last Choir Standing. And The Seekers sang folk/gospel songs as well.

I'd guess that an acapella version of 'Don't Stop Believing' isn't going to be the most imaginative choice at the moment....

The lyrics are easy to learn and it's actually quite hard to start this in the wrong key - Don't ask me why. I sing acappella and this is my 'easy' choice. Best of luck.

"Somebody To Love" - if you've got a belt voice, definitely go for this one.

Do you know what this choir usually sing style wise?
try to sing something that would fit in with their repertoire. That will give them a good idea of how you could 'fit in' with the established members as your voice will have to blend in. Try to find something which shows the range of your voice. Good luck. |

Amsterdam (John Denver/Jacques Brel)
Take Me Home Country Roads Mighty Quinn (Manfred Mann) Hey Jude A World Of Our Own (The Seekers) Morningtown Ride (The Seekers) Georgy Girl (The Seekers) On The Other Side (The Seekers) Stop Crying Your Heart Out (Oasis) When You're Gone Get Back Bridge Over Troubled Water (Simon & Garfunkel) Summertime (Porgy & Bess) Somewhere (West Side Story) I feel I mimic things though, eg I sounded like Rhydian singing Somewhere and BOTW, though not in the same class

Sing whatever you sing best and are most comfortable singing. Don't try to second guess what they might like to hear - they want to hear your voice.

Not only do they want to see your voice is good enough, but that it will blend with the others and that you're musical enough. |

FC makes a goos point. From what I've seen on their website I dont think you have to "audition" for Rock Choir per se, but it'll be interesting to see what is sung by others, what the arrangement is etc.
