Hi
With MusicNet and the all-NEW Napster supposedly starting in a few weeks I was wondering whether anyone here was willing to pay for online music.

I was never a big user of Napster as I love buying CDs, and Napster was just no fun. When I did use it I would download maybe one or two tracks off an album and if I liked them I'd go out an buy that album. I wasn't the type of person to download entire albums, leaving my computer on at all hours!

I don't use any file-swapping program any more. I tried WinMX but as I like alternative music it didn't really have much to offer me.

I think that will be a big problem with the new services. While their back catalogues are no doubt very large, they're also very commercial which doesn't interest me.

Also, it will be a bit inconvenient having to subscribe to PressPlay if you like a band signed to SONY, and then having to subscribe to MusicNet if you like a band on EMI. This could work out very expensive for anyone serious about online music.

Another problem is that free services are still out there (Morpheus, Audio Galaxy, WinMX), so these new services are going to have to offer more than just 50 downloads a month, right!?!

If you ask me, the BIG 5 should have got behind Napster and licensed all their music to the one program for a fee. Napster could then start charging a monthly subscription BUT it would have all of the BIG 5's artists on. Whether people would play for this service is another question, but it is at least better than having two or three different ones!

Mike

So do I and most other people, thats why IMO the music industry handled Napster very badly, sales weren't down - in fact they were up i think, just being paranoid I guess

As for charging to use file swapping I dont think it will work. There will always be at least one decent website or app to get 'em and if that fails there will ALWAYS be FTP

When the IMO/music industry took Napster to court the CD sales were up by 69%. After the court case had finished the CD sales were down to 59%. Those two figures are just estimates that I read in a computer magazine that was covering the court case and those are also worldwide figures.

I'm a beta tester for the all-new napster membership service. I haven't even been sent the first beta yet, so I reckon the real deal is a good few months away yet. I probably won't subscribe after the free beta trial unless it is very good.

im not going to pay!! im just going to keep using audiogalaxy!! which have an option! you can be a gold member and pay so much a month or year which means u can get songs faster! or be a normal member like me!

i think its bad what happened to napster as everyone used it and now hardly anyone will sign up and join and they will probably go out of business

Personally I use Adaware 5.5 to remove spyware, although I'd heard that the audiogalaxy stuff regenerates every time you run the prog.

PS adaware is v. good, I highly recommend it, it gets rid of practically anything including spying cookies and registry entries

spyware is software which 'spys' on your web usage habits and sends information about this to its creators mostly for advertising usage...
