Satnav on my iphone?
RAY VON

I have iphone 3gs 16gb.
Will there be a satnav facility already on it, or is it possible to get an app for this?

There is very basic mapping and direction finding with the built-in Google Maps app. However if you want a proper sat nav with spoken turn by turn navigation - check out the Apps in the Navigation section of the App Store - loads of choice there including Tom Tom.

Thanks for that reply. I see you can download the tomtom app for about 50 quid. I wonder if it's better to get that or spend another 30 quid plus and physically buy a tomtom??

Tomtom on the iPhone really isn't much cop compared to the cheaper (half the price) CoPilot Live. I've used both on my phone and have now removed Tomtom because its that bad in comparison.

The live traffic info and re-routing works really well, as does the little feature that'll direct you to the cheapest petrol station at that moment in time.

I dont have any sat nav software on my iphone but I have co-pilot live on a windows mobile phone. It's excellent, if it is anything like it is on my phone on the iphone I'd really recommend it. I see it is really cheap as well.

Just did a quick check on the Itunes store there 3 satnavs

TomTom £54.99
Co Pliot £26.99
Navigon £29.49

I've been looking into getting a sat nav for my iphone for awhile, but i dont know is better part from the prices.

There is at least a fourth you can add to that list that I know of,

iGO My way 2009 which costs £23.99 for the UK & Ireland version. It uses the same Navteq maps as the more or less similarly priced Navigon app.

I've looked at the maps of the TomTom app and the Navteq maps of Navigon and iGO and in all the areas I'm familiar with, the TomTom maps are superior in local detail to the Navteq maps (the TomTom map includes back lanes in an urban area whereas Navteq just includes the main named streets, for instance).

I can't comment about CoPilot as it cannot be installed on an iPod touch currently.

I haven't used any of them in a car but most reviews suggest the GPS in an iPhone 3G or later is not really as good as that in a dedicated car sat-nav unit, so none of them are likely to be as good as a standalone device.

I can only comment on the maps therefore, but from my limited experience, the TomTom app is superior, but it is also almost double the price.

I've used a few different ones and they generally work just as good as a dedicated Sat-Navs - accurate and fast location fix.

Be aware with some of them you have to pay extra for things like Speed Camera warnings, POIs and traffic info etc.

I have "Co pilot live" on my iPhone working great. It might be a tad quiet on the motorway but I have a sony blue tooth radio and it plays through the stereo, the ipod and the instructions nicley fade in.

It has plenty of good options like customising your speeds. putting in many locations and asking it to plan a multi drop route! It appears that you get monthly updates free.
Speed cams are included. I havent worked out how to add poi's yet. (you have an I phone you can google/yell the address)

It can display the speed limit and tell you if you are a percentage over that limit

The route choices seam ok but can take you down the high street rather than a faster flowing route

it works in land scape and portrait and is nicer to look at than my out of date navman. However the I phone is very shiney and I got dazzeled by it when the sun was over my shoulder.

the standard voice is very gentle and relaxed

well worth £25

you'll need the tom tom iphone dock for it to be reliable
