Contestant's Dorothy Dresses

I am watching 'Over the Rainbow' on BBC HD & I wondered does anybody else think the gingham Dorothy dresses the Girls have to wear at the very tarty? I can see there breasts bouncing up and down through the chiffon part ofthe dress. Isn't Dorothy supposed to be a 12 year old girl? In general I think they are making the girls too sexy I don't buy any of them as a young teen dorothy.

I agree- the chiffon modesty top didn't cover very much!

Dorothy is 16. I thought the dresses were very pretty but I agree about the top bit!

Dorothy isn't 16, Judy Garland was 16 when she played Dorothy. In the book Dorothy was 10.

Anyway I agree about the dresses, even my husband asked why they had dressed the dorothy's up as tarts.

Yep. Too tarty, too much chest.

My husband came in and said "thought this was a search for Dorothy not Dorothy Does Oz"
Yes in the book Dorothy is 10

This is a bad thing?

Haven't paid much attention to this show, but I shall be watching it now!

They are verging on the obscene, especially for the bustier girls!

Absolutely right. And as she was only 4ft 11 she looked a lot younger...and they bandaged down her breast to make her seem more child like.

Everything about the would be Dorothys leaves a bad taste in my mouth right now...

There is something really uncomfortable about watching these girls tarted up & pracing round the stage in short skirts & low cut tops. Althought I know the contestants are old enough to dress like that, there is something really unsavory about watching Girls who are ment to be portraying a child dressed like that.

I want dorthy to be a wholesome girl not a little slapper.

Totally agree the dresses are far too tarty. No doubt it's done to keep the male interest.

I think the best way to deal with this is to say "okay, we're portraying Dorothy as a 16 year old and that's the end of it"

There's no need to stick to what's in the book. None of these girls look 10 or 12, so I don't see any virtue in trying to make them look that age, or trying to hide the fact that they are sexually mature.

For practical reasons, Dorothy is usually played by 20+ year olds in the theatre. It's not like this is unusual.

I just think they look a little sleazy. A Tin Man, Scarecrow and Wizard befriending her in those outfits comes across as bit dodgy!!

Not to mention the Cowardly Lion.

Yeah I agree about the dresses looking a bit unsuitable for contestants who are vying to play the role of a young girl. The design of the bottom half of the dress is fine but that corset thing they wear, places too much emphasis on their bust for my liking.

ALW has said for the last 2 shows about thinking outside the box a bit, he wanted a Timberlake Joseph!
He still wants the youngest Dorothy available from the line up but as you say it doesn't have to be ruled by the film & book.

It is after all a 'modern' version 70 years on.

The Dorothy they choose can be whatever age ALW wants, its not ruled by the book.

I have to admit, that the show is basically an excuse to watch a load of young women prance about jiggling their big breasts while we all watch.

Im not saying its a bad thing....................................

Agreed.

I think the viewing public are confused as to exactly what direction ALW wants to go with this thing. Whether he wants to change it about or not, he goes on about Dorothy being this innocent farmgirl who wants to run away from her life, not a grown woman who looks like she's been there and done that.

Sexualising these hopefuls by putting them in low cut tops and tonnes of slap seems way off the mark to me. Whether he likes it or not, people have an idea of how Dorothy should look and it's interesting to me that both the older page 3 girl and the black girl were in the bottom two. This indicates that the public aren't buying into the move away from the traditional Dorothy they know and love.

Will be interesting to see how close to the original the eventual winner is...

An effort to keep boyfriends and husbands happy I guess. I didn't think it seemed a bit odd when I first saw them in their dresses but then it doesn't surprise me in all their solo songs and group numbers their wearing either short skirts or low dresses. They did it last year but it wasn't as noticeable as they weren't looking for a naive kid.
