"We had a huge row early Saturday morning that got out of control. We've had to try very hard to make our relationship work, but I feel it would be better for all of us if we separated. The split is amicable and we are in the process of planning Bobby's christening and first birthday."

I don't care for either Jade of Jeff as they are both as bad as each other but I hope they put their differences aside for the sake of their children.

I think still living together is a bad idea at the moment. Maybe they should live apart for a while to let things settle down.

Well I know they split the cost of their new house 50/50. Jade paid her half in full while Jeff took out a mortgage on the other 50% of the cost of the house. Not sure where that leaves them both legally now, though.

Common law carries no legal status, so he wouldn't have a leg to stand on from a marital law point of view. It's quite rare in this country to get "half of everything", even after a very long marriage. Courts tend to look at need rather than arbitrary percentages.

The purchase of property together is a matter for contract law - if they bought half each, one will have to buy the other out.

In fact, money is more likely to flow the other way; currently Jeff is earning whereas Jade is unemployed - he will be paying child support for the next 18 years at the very least...
