Which previous incarnation of the Doctor does Matt Smith remind you of?

I can see now why when Matt Smith did the audition they thought he was perfect. He is so very doctor-y. But who does he remind you most of and why? I have heard people say Tom Baker but I see a lot of Peter Davidson in him. I was absolutely thrilled with the show and think he did a wonderful job. I also think that the doctor companion relationship is what makes the show so special and I'm delighted to have such a great companion to watch in Karen Gillian!

He's definitely more of a Classic Who than Nu Who Doctor.

Apparently he was a big fan of Patrick Troughton, so that may have been an influence on him, but I wouldn't know having never seen Troughton in action.

He became a fan of Troughton's - didn't know much about Who until he got the job.

Personally he reminds me most of Joanna Lumley's Doctor

Spoiler
My way of saying I think comparisons like this are silly.

Doesn't seem that different to David Tennant so far.

Yeah, according to Moffat in tonight's Confidential he hadn't really seen it before his audition.

Get the impression from his interviews that most of his knowledge of the show comes from research he's done since.

Alrightmate...where've you been? Missed you!

MS seemed pretty distinctive to me for a first episode: as Graham Chapman/John Cleese nearly said in The Meaning of Life: it's a little early to be forcing Time Lord roles onto it don't you think?

And he seems to have done pretty well. He's no David Tennant or John Barrowman in that regard, but he seems more knowledgeable than Catherine Tate, at least.

I did think when he shouted "the doctor will see you now" near the end, that he did it in a way that was redolent of DT.

Very much reminds me of Davison, especially in Time of Angels.
He also commented in Eleventh Hour that he might have a 'face that no-one listens to, again'. I reckon that's a reference to the Fifth Doctor - the others all had more gravitas.
I don't think it's just his youth, I think it's the expressions he uses.

All of them, but mostly Matt Smith's Dr

Since the first episode (when, least we forget he was still "cooking" and thus still supposed to be somewhat like DT) he has been very un-DT like in my opinion. I see shades of Two, Four, Five, Six and Seven at times. Mostly he is Eleven though.

All of them, including Peter Cushing.

I can see where Alrightmate is coming from with him being a bit like DT, there have been a few DT moments, but I think he's a good mix of a lot of the previous doctors, I don't think I've ever seen a full Troughton episode, so I don't know if there's influence form him, I've seen full episodes of the other doctors.

Another way to look at it, he's definetely not like Jon Pertwee or Colin Baker, well to me anyway. It's been a long time since I watched old Who. I really do believe he's made the role his own though, he's a bit different to the other doctors, not sure whether thats the youth or not, but youth isn't such a bad thing - the doctor's just having a mid life (well late mid life) crisis lol.

I'm seeing a lot of Troughton with some bits of The Colin Baker.

The way he holds his hands is very Frank Spencer like in my mind
Sorry

I've found him very similar to Peter Davison's portrayal. Maybe it's because they were both relatively young when taking the role. Both Davison and matt Smith seem to bring a vulnerability to the character that others didn't.

From the first episode he seemed very Ten at times...but story wise that made sense...since then there have been flashes of of Ten, but not as heavy as they were in TEH...mostly he acts like two, with a mix of Six and Seven, and times a bit four, and the energy of five. Up untill TOTA, I found it quite hard to pin poibt what was exactly Eleven about him, but now I am getting there, for example, the way he stole that box from the mueseum, I can't see anyother Doctor do it the way he did...and that become perfectly Eleven for me!!!!

In terms of dialogue and it's pacing, one liners 'big scene speeches' and so on I find these very much DT's Doctor in their delivery, but this will also be down to the faster paced nature of the show since its relaunch, so it would be hard to avoid in places.

Elements of Troughton definitely.

But above all MS has put his own personal stamp on the role which as a viewer Im enjoying getting to know and watch. Ive said a few times now but Im really looking forward to the next series when he completely works it all out having had chance to reflect on his entire first series.

But for me in 'Angels' he displayed a nice touch when producing the essential goods for any Doctor, acute comedy timing (trying to come up with a witty 'angel in a haystack retort' totally failing and awkwardly adjusting his jacket also and the ability to give the big speeches, his 'one thing you don't put in a trap' in particular.

A great Doctor in the making, most definitely, without a shadow of a doubt. Sublime casting by SM.

William Hartnell. Anyone in reincarnation?? I suppose Bill could be Matt.

A mixture bag of Docs 2, 4, 5 and 6. But IMO mainly Docs 2 and 5.

I've taken to Matt Smith quicker than DT, well I never took to DT which might have something to do with it. But Matt Smith does have a very Classic-Who feel about him, whereas 10 just seemed to be a dumbed down kids version of Who.

To be honest none of them.

I don't even see him as the Doctor yet. He doesn't seem to have quite grasped the role yet and in my view Amy is actually carryng him at the moment.

I keep coming back to Seventh when I watch him. I could easily see McCoy (and many of the others) doing the 'doctor will see you now' line, but particularly his somewhat staccato delivery when he's thinking about things and some of his physical mannerisms.

But particularly the voice, he's got the same sort of lip sounds as McCoy, if that makes sense.

He's Tom Baker and Patrick Troughton split right down the middle.
