Dario Argento does Doctor Who

This is a point that deserves its own thread because it would be lost to the three other people who would know what I'm on about if I put it in the main episode thread.

At the end of the episode, where we get the big wedding dress reveal, did anyone else, anywhere, think that this sequence could have come out of a Dario Argento movie?

The tight tracking shot across the disturbing children's toys is classic Argento from Deep Red through Tenebrae to Sleepless. But what clinches it is the sudden change in the tone of the music. It is unmistakably Goblin. The repetitive off key rhythm could have come from any number of Argento movies.

As soon as I saw and heard it I was taken straight into Dario's world. Given that many of his stories are also dark fairy stories I cannot help but think that this was a deliberate homage.

Anyone else?

What do you thik the people moaning about Murray Golds overbearing music would make of thesound design in Suspiria?

In response to your question, I can't say the first thing I thought of was Argento, though I can see where you are coming from. I don't know if it's a road the production team are going to pursue.

Like Wildbill, I didn't see the Argento side to the scene but I'll have another look and see. If it was Goblinesque then I'm surprised I didn't notice but then I am an old git so may have missed it completely.

On an aside, it's nice to see other Argento fans around. Liked his stuff for many many years. Have you ever been to his shop in Rome? Used to live there so popped down whenever I was in the middle of town. The museum underneath is brilliant. I also know the girl that was killed in Tenebrae, she is the sister of a mate I did some website work with when I was living there.

Well, maybe the people who hate Doctor Who's music would also not get along with any Argento movie.

Really, I've watched this a few times and the more I see it, the more I think that it's a deliberate Argento homage. The music changes to a significant and unique theme. It's so Goblin.

Ooh I'm liking the thought of an argento produced episode. Take it back to the days when kids would hide behind the sofa when an episode of Doctor Who came on.

I was rather thinking Wes Craven, given the little girl alone, the dark sights unseen...wow, fab: Moffat's going to give us Saturday Evening child-abusing serial killers...so what Doctor Who has always been about and let's face it...what the new series really needs...along with buckets more blood...Tom Savini on the production/prosthetic design front anyone?

Come to think of it there was an flavour of Demons in the Waters of Mars. Maybe the crew sit around watching his movies between takes.

The whole style of the Doctor's point of view scene was lifted from the flash forward scenes in Run Lola Run and there was also a nice tip of the hat to Its A Wonderful Life in the set up of the shot when the Doctor runs out of Jeff's house (after the laptop scene)
