Orange tethering.
Am thinking about taking a mobile Dolphin plan.
Anyone know if the 500mb allowance still allows tethering to a laptop? |

If I am stuck in a hotel and the wifi is not free I use my nokia as a modem for my laptop.
I'm on Orange and have 500mb a month. Is this not allowed then? |

croyde - are you using an Orange branded / locked phone, or just an Orange SIM in an otherwise nothing to do with Orange unlocked Nokia?

From what i remember you need to be carefull, iv'e got the 250 mb DATA bundle, which rolls over any unused Mb's up to a maximum of 500, I dont think they have this bundle anymore
all i can find info about is there "internet" bundles that say you cannot use your phone as a modem on them, so im not giving up my bundle for love nor money. That said, I dont think i have heard of anyone getting caught for using there bundle in the way you want. |

I only have used it when broadband is down and it does not appear to impact much on my bundle. I would have thought that as long as you were within your data usage, as you pay if you go over, you could use it how you like. I presumed that the iPhone was the one they were worried about as the data bundle is effectively a fair usage policy, thus open to being abused. If I go over 500 mb, I get charged. Simple as that. |

Is there a subtle difference between an official "tethering" service, and simply using your phone as a Bluetooth modem via *99***x#?

I occasionally used my LC KC910 on Orange as a modem, worked fine and they never twigged, or contacted me about it anyway.
Since switching to o2 with the same handset the tethering doesn't work any more - bah. |

http://www1.orange.co.uk/service_pla...March2010.html "5. Unlimited mobile internet - subject to fair usage. Mobile internet is not to be used for other activities (e.g. using your handset as a modem..." So the same rules apply to their general "animal" plans, regardless of handset. |

Orange says no... unless you pay extra of course. It's like buying a packet of crisps and telling me that I can't eat them slowly to enjoy the taste more as they want me to buy an additional packet instead.
Screw that. Up to last year (hardly ever use mobile internet now), I just tethered when I wanted, but kept within limits. I spoofed now and then, but I don't think I really needed to. |

Although I am talking about a different network (3) I 'teather' via my phone all the time, using data from my 'internet max' add on which I pay £5 extra. I used to use a cable from my phone, but since getting a nokia with wifi, a great app I have used is 'joikuspot' which turns your phone into a mobile WiFi router. It works great, and have not been charged for using the internet on my laptop once.

I too am interested in doing this. I'm only on an Orange PAYG Dolphin account with which I get 100mb of mobile internet use per month (as long as I have topped up by £10). Looking at this page (terms and conditions no.11) makes me think that mobile tethering is ok but with a warning that if I exceed 100mb I'll be charged appropriately. Am I reading this correctly? If so, 100mb should be plenty for a quick look at Facebook and an email check 3 or 4 times while on holiday surely?
