Changing from BT to Sky
Adam D
04-04-2010
Well we have been looking for an excuse to change our providers over to Sky but BT tied us into another 12 month contract sometime last year without us realising. Its not been a problem as we have been with BT for years with little problems although the new 7pm to 7am is going to cause a problem. A lot of our calls are 6pm and after before having tea, watching tv and so on.

I want to give sky a call and see what they can offer as we are also looking to change one of our Sky+ boxes to a HD one.

The thing is, we are still in contract with BT, if i tell sky i want to change how will it happen if BT say we are still in contract? I could probably ring them up and get them to cancel but then obviously we would have no contract with BT so no land line during the period ?

BT have a thing where they automatically renew customers contracts after a small amount of time after the current contract expiry date, it's tied into their terms and conditions somewhere.

BT will not stop you transferring your phoneline away from them to Sky, but they will send you a final bill with a disconnection aka cessation fee on there which is usually your monthly charge multiplied by the number of months left on your contract.

It could be worthwhile checking out your terms and conditions to see if there is any way you can get out of your contract due to changes in your service.

To be honest phone companies will follow BT's footsteps on this one.

Previously,phone companies followed Telewest.

Free weekend calls
Abolishing national call rates
Call connection costs replacing Minimum call charges
Increase in landline to landline call costs

All introduced by Telewest, followed by the rest of the industry.

So expect the evening rate to go to 7pm on all major phone firms.
