Matt is said to have blew them away in the audition and was not the type of person they had in mind. Stephen Moffatt has said that Matt has portrayed some scenes with such intensity in his eyes.

I think we could see a hint of that last night.

For me he portrayed the role with such maturity that I didn't actually think of him, as an actor, in the same age bracket as Amy.

I thought he seemed a lot older too. I really like him, I think he's going to be 2010's Tom Baker.

He seems to have a far wider range than I'd expected. very pleasantly surprised.

I always thought he had potential and he really delivered last night. I suspect the best is yet to come though, as I think we only saw a hint of the new Doctors true personality last night.

I think we are definatly starting to see what the Moff saw.

Couldn't agree more, completely blown away by Matt Smith, amazing casting. I look forward to him fully finding his feet during this and the next series because I think we are in for a spectacular treat.

Matt is quickly going to make us forget about David Tennant & that is some feat.

Great start for him.

I'm really loving all the positivity surrounding Matt Smith. I was in the "give the guy a chance" camp but he impressed me and had me transfixed to the telly. obviously, Karen also helped in the transfixication but yeah, Matt "who's da man" Smith is a great actor who is gonna shine as the Doctor

I'm totally with you. Although upset (and I still am) about David leaving, I was always in "give him a chance" mode. I came out of that tonight into "Matt was amazing" mode. Matt Smith is the Doctor!

Just so long as we never see what Amy saw.

I thought Matt was great in his first DW role yesterday, he didn't seem that young looking and i really liked his enthusiasm throughout the first episode.

I also liked the energy that Amy ponds character was acted for his companion, i'm looking forward to seeing the next episode.

David Tennant's gone. Welcome to the role Matt Smith.

There were times where I saw flashes of Tennant in his personality but I think this was mainly down the writing and Matt's natural accent.

As far as I can tell from trailers, previews and interviews, he very much evolves throughout the series. Very much like Tennant's Doc, actually - compare his Doc in episodes like New Earth / School Reunion with 'The Runaway Bride' and he actually changes quite a bit. Becomes a bit more settled into what we said goodbye to at Christmas.

Yep. The bit that done it for me was when he said to the alien guys toward the end: "Hello....I'm the Doctor" Short pause "Basically" longer pause "run" The look in his face was totally "you don't want to mess with me" Brilliant stuff

I loved the enthusiasm and madness he brought to the role. I am already loving Matt Smith's Doctor and am really looking forward to the rest of the series.

Loving the sheer eccentricity of Smith's all-new Doctor. I love his little mannerisms, like how he pulls objects close up to view them as if he's wearing thick-rimmed glasses. Peers at things under his brow. Really odd. I expect we'll see much more of his alien nature as the show progresses.

But for me, you couldn't have asked for a more confidently stated opener and performance from Matt, and indeed Karen. It was just perfect.

Hope the quality is reflected in continued high ratings.

I thought that was deliberate in the sense that the "new" doctor still retains bits of the previous doctors personality until they have fully regenerated?

He's certainly going to be a bloody difficult Doctor to do a good impression of!
Bizarrely , all those finger movements and mumbling does remind me a bit of legendary TV botanist David Bellamy
He just needs the beard!

I think with Matt Smith, like any new Doctor, took a bit of getting used to after David Tennant. That doesn't mean he was crap by any means, far from it. I thought he was excellent throughout, there was a freshness to his interpretation of the role and I can't wait to see what else he brings to the role. Could be the best Doctor yet! (I hope!)

I've only just started watching Dr. Who and so wasn't so deeply attached to David Tennant (though I did thoroughly enjoy him in the handful of episodes I've seen), but I thought Matt Smith was fantabulous. Very energetic, fun, a bit dark....loads of layers and very exciting.

He was fab, bit- dare I say ,sexy.... the look, the voice and very 'aspie' at times

I get the feeling Matt Smith's Doctor has a mean streak in him

With David Tennant i think they tried too hard at times to portray him as an angry, vengeful, God-like being and it looked silly at times

But with Matt Smith, i get the feeling he's going to have no patience and it's going to make him angry and at times despise what he does, i think we saw a bit of that when he was rushing Amy into telling him how long it's been since he was there last, shouting at her "IT'S IMPORTANT"

I'm probably very off but that's just what i got from it

Me too and I love being proved right

Even my mam was impressed and she hasn't liked the Doctor since Tom Baker
