IPAD - 3G connectivity
tsr2

Hi,

Anyone know if an IPAD purchased in the US will work with a UK Sim card - or are they SIM locked to a national carrier e.g. AT&T in the US.

Thanks

I believe they use MicroSIMs and not conventional SIM cards. AFAIK no UK operator supports them at the moment but this will no doubt change in the next few weeks, once the 3G iPad becomes available. See http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/27/a...sim-explained/

edit: I vaguely recall Jobs saying in the iPad keynote that strictly speaking the SIMs are not soft locked (or tied to contracts) to a particular operator. But obviously that's irrelevant at the moment until they are supported in the UK and by more then one operator.

The current model out in the US is the wifi only one if I recall correctly from the keynote. The 3G model is due to follow about a month later

I am visiting New York in June and plan on bringing a 3G iPad back with me.

They are not locked to a carrier so we can swap for a uk sim card back here, I'm sure I read vodafone supports microsims now, either way somebody will shortly as the ipad is due to land here by months end!

My only concern is the software, you sign up for data via iPad, is it going to know we have inserted a different sim and adjust options and plans accordingly? I'm hoping it will be just like vodafone when I switched iPhone carrier, sync to iTunes with new sim and it will download a .ipcc carrier file then the settings will auto install over the air. To be honest we won't know until someone tries, by the time I go, we should know.

Hope this helps.

We will have one here before June, why not just buy it here?

As I said in another thread I reckon a Mobile Wi-Fi device is far more cost effective as you can then connect all your devices to it.
