He's not a bad lad when it comes to acting, but he is one odd looking fu##er...the twatty/nerdy clothes don't help much either..

I’ve always wanted to see more McGann – he could have been amazing but I love Matt Smith so far.

I was never a Tennant fan. Loved his Hamlet but not his Who. Too Dick Van Dyke.

After one episode? No. Liked it, liked him, but Tom, Paul and Patrick are still my top three Doctors. Matt is certainly better than the last two, though. And I was never keen on Jon Pertwee.

I'm (as yet) ambivalent to Smith - I'm happily waiting to see how things go. But I can't understand this thing people have about his looks. We've never had a conventionally handsome Doctor, and I'd argue Smith is the closest we've had. To me as himself he looks like a model - you could put him (in his Doctor outfit) in an advert with D&G or Gucci labels on it and I'd believe you. He has the bone structure, the skinniness and the big hair in his eyes that are just what young leading men look like right now (Patterson, Colin Morgan, Ben Whitshaw, Nicholas Hoult, Christian Cooke - all variations on the same thing). Plus he's got a very expressive face, great smile, and looked lovely, imo, taking his shirt off. He's very attractive, but in that accessible way that's not too 'handsome', that means girls can think they could have a chance if they met him.

Gorgeous is in the eye of the beholder and I'm not arguing with anyone who doesn't personally find him attractive (I can't see the appeal of Brad Pitt myself but I get that's a minority opinion), but I think anyone who thinks his looks are not helping him is not paying sufficent attention.

He is off to a good start. I won't try and judge where he fits in my pecking order of Doctors till the end of this series however.

The Doctor is supposed to be odd looking. Thats one of his defining characteristics.

Indeed. I think Matt Smith is infinitely more attractive than Brad Pitt

Even though I watched one or two episodes of Christopher Ecclestone when he was the Doctor.

David Tennant was my first Doctor in a way because it was during his time when series three of New Who had started that i began watching the show religiously.

(I have since watched series one in full and i also have the series 2 boxset)

Just like Martha Jones is the first companion for me, (although I was fully aware of Rose and Billie Piper etc) Donna however made a great impression and she also became my 'first' companion

Saying that though. I think Matt Smith as the Doctor and the new companion, Amy Pond are both going to be amazing and since this is another new era for Doctor. I think they could both become (depending on how the series progesses of course) in first rank of my favorites along with Ten, Martha and Donna.

Well as far as looks go..merchandising and girls fancying him is all part of what makes for a better show in terms of sales and crossover appeal.
Smith is anything but cool...

I don't know. Isn't it chic to be geek these days?

I think it will take another couple of episodes, I used to say David Tennant was my favourite but during the specials I started to realise I liked the actor more than his doctor, as he often seemed very weak, the only episodes I like his doctor was Moffats episodes, and the odd few others such as Family of Blood double (though he wasnt really the doctor for most of that).

No, having watched Dr. Who from the very first episode way back when, David Tennant is my favourite his light and dark doctor really appealed to me, I also liked him as an actor before he took the role over as DW.

I thoroughly enjoyed Matt's Doctor and look forward to seeing how he develops in the role. I never once thought of David during TEH not being disrespectful to him but his has door closed and a new one opened with Matt. Over the years of watching DT and each regeneration I have never compared one Doctor to another I've always held them separate and enjoyed their portrayal or not as the case may be.

I wish Matt well and lots of success with his Doctor and I'm sure he will bring another dimension to the role.

Matt Smith is probably far and away the coolest guy they have had in the role. Did you not hear him on Radio 1 the other day?

HHmm. Well, I too have watched Dr WHO from day one, and Loved Bill H, didn't really like Patrick (probably physchological because he wasn't Bill, if you know what I mean), Then really loved Tom B's take on the Doctor. I thought that Paul McGann could probably have been a good Dr if given more of a chance, but his story was dire. I thought that CE was absolutely brilliant, for me equal to Tom Baker.

David T? Well, he played the Dr so I enjoyed it but, no, not really a fav ourite for me.

Matt? Well what a cracking start! Looking forward to it and having watched Confidential, I took to him a lot more, he was very gracious I thought about young 'Amelia' .

So, all in all, too soon to answer the OP question one way or the other, but certainly a very good start.

What a load of cobblers! An odd looking Doctor in nerdy clothes is the norm, for crying out loud! Tom Baker's Doctor was very odd-looking, but arguably the greatest of them all.

David Tennant (whom I thought was very good in the role, incidentally) being good-looking and wearing comparitively conventonal clothing was an EXCEPTION to the norm in terms of the Doctor's appearance.

And as for being cool. Cool? What is this disposition known as being cool? And why do the young and the vacuous find it so desirable?

Too early to say but it's got me back to watching the show. Had Tennant and RTD stayed would probably not be watching. The End of Time was the final straw for me in utter crassness, far too long a quality of RTD's tenure.
I adored Smith, Gillan and the Eleventh Hour. It filled me with the same enthusiasm that "The Time Warrior" (my first ever Who) and "Rose" did.

Matt joins my 'top 4' Doctors. It's hard to narrow it down more than that because they are so different to each other. In no particular order:

Math Smith (on first glimpse, admittedly)
Peter Davison ('My Doctor' as it were)
Sylvester McCoy (fantastic once he got darker in the second and thrid series)
Christopher Eccleston (wish he'd done more than one series)

I didn't particularly like Tennant's Doctor, and not because he wasn't Eccleston. I think he started off OK, but as with Tom Baker, was allowed to go off the rails by a succession of writers and directors and by an executive directorial team who really should have gotten him to tone it down a bit. The arrogance in the portrayal was very annoying. Smith has already demonstrated that the Doctor is far cleverer, far more skilled and knows more than anyone else on the planet and did so without shouing the fact from the rooftops.

It's a sign of the times. We live in a shallow society where image is everything these days, sadly.

Too soon to say but I was worried that I wasn't going to like him at all.

Though I did like him in last Saturday's episode.

So we will see...

IMO...DR Who fans (alone) are not enough to keep this show on top...the casual fan is needed to keep the ratings high..
As for image and cool....thats the difference between jarvis cocker and liam gallagher...and which one is still filling arenas !

The answer to the question of the thread for me is a No. Only seen him in one full length episode so it's very early to say

I enjoyed Matt's performance as the new Doc and can see him being my 3rd favoutite after David Tennant and Tom Baker. But for me personally Tennant just got the character so spot on that I really can't see anyone replacing him as my all-time fav.

Too early for me to say, but what a belting start!

I'm a massive Tom Baker fan, but the signs are good for Smith after just the one episode. I can't tell you how much I love the new look costume and most of all the gangly personality that comes in it. Just absolutely marvellous. I hope that, like David Tennant, he hangs around in the role for some time, if not longer.
