New laptop, iTunes & iPhone

My laptop suddenly gave up the ghost of which my iTunes was on with a backup of my iPhone!
I'm not worried on losing my music as I can redo that from my home cd collection.
What I need to know is when I download iTunes on my new laptop, I plug in my iPhone and then what... Back up? Will it recognise my iPhone?
Please could some kind person talk me through the process.
Thanks in anticipation!

I think when you plug the iphone in it will tell you it is synced with another library, and ask if you want to erase it and sync with the new one. This is what happened when i last built a new PC, forgot to back up the itunes library and had to start again with my ipod video. I don't know if it will let you transfer your apps or if you will have to download them again. Sorry i can't be much more helpful than that.

I've got two laptops but only use one of them to sync my iphone. I'm able to connect the iphone to the other laptop which also has itunes on it and transfer all my apps and purchases to that itunes without syncing it.
