Hey,

Apple just announced a new OS for the iPhone due in the summer, features are as follows

Multitasking
Folders
Enhanced email
iBooks for iPhone OS
Enterprise
Game Center
iAd
All will be available for the iPhone 3GS but the iPhone 3G is missing multi-tasking due to a hardware limitation.

The iPad will also receive the updates but it wont be until autumn.

Here's another little list for OS4:

Notable new features for users:

Multitasking.

Spell check (like on the iPad).

Bluetooth keyboard support (again, on the iPad).

User-defined wallpaper (a jailbreak favorite).

Tap to focus when recording video, just like with photos, and a 5x digital zoom for the camera.

Playlist creation and nested playlists.

App folders for sorting apps! You can even put an app folder in the dock.

Enhanced Mail! You can have a merged inbox view, switch between inboxes quickly, and sync to more than one Exchange account.

There's also threaded messaging (at last!) and in-app attachment viewing.

iBooks, just like on iPad, only smaller. You can wirelessly sync books between platforms, a la Kindle.

Enterprise features, including remote device management and wireless app distribution.

Game Center. It's like Xbox Live, but for iPhone games. Includes achievements, leaderboards, and match making.

It will be available as a "developer preview," and out for consumers later this year.

What does this mean???

I can already wirelessly transfer books from my computer to my iphone.

But all in all the updates sound good. I'll upgrade my phone when it's time.

From what steve jobs said it's only multi-tasking that wont be available for iPhone 3G.

I'm not sure if the update is even available for iPhone 2G.

1st gen iphone and iPod Touch were not mentioned so probably best to say they will not be supporting the 1st gen devices with 4.0

My jailbroken iPhone 3G has multitasking so it can't be a hardware problem. I often have 2 or 3 apps running.

it could be the way apple have designed the multitasking, they tested the 3G and deemed it not able to cope with it

I'm sure they could bring multitasking to iPhone 3G and just restrict it to maybe 3 apps max.
Gotta be honest can't wait to be rid of iPhone and Apples closed platform. All these big fanfares about new OS that basically do what most phones have done for years ! C'mon, one of the features is you can change the wallpaper

I see my pet peeve is still not rectified: No bluetooth file transfer to/from non-iPhones.

It syncs the position of the book. So if you read up to page 100 on the iPad, then carry on reading on the iPhone it will open from page 100. It also syncs over bookmarks.

iPhone 3G has 128MB of RAM, 3GS 256MB of RAM. Given how harsh Apple is with Safari tab caching, I can easily see why they've chosen not to implement it.

Yep, have to agree. I can understand why they haven't included it, just wanted to say it was possible cos I'm already using multitasking.

The mention of in-app texting did it for me! That's one of my main annoyances - getting a text when I'm in an application that I know won't retain its position if I exit it to reply.

Yeah I have to admit that is annoying, watching a stream on Sky Sports and having to exit it to reply and read a text.

In App texting is the main one. I don't get multi-tasking for anything else but each to their own.

It's great that these updates are given free.

Is this maybe the most 'exciting' update to date?

It is for me, and seems like they will give iPhone a new lease of life in a sence.

Can't wait, I also can't wait to see the next gen iPhone! !

Semi-related, but Apple just announced the release of Webkit2

Basically it has the same split proces model as Chrome, but they've built it right into Webkit rather than being browser specific, so everybody using it as a rendering engine gets the benefits.

Is there a source for this?

I read it as that apps would be able to integrate your text messages into them (as they can your location for example), as it was mentioned when the 1500 new api's were talked about.

Quote:
“10:12AM DanF: Over 1500 new developer APIs. Can access calendard, phot library, access to video camera data, Quick Look, put SMS inside apps (!), can use the same testing apps we uses, and over 2000 APIs for hardware-accelerated math functions.”
