I read it as that apps would be able to integrate your text messages into them (as they can your location for example), as it was mentioned when the 1500 new api's were talked about.”

No I think it's actually just Compose SMS from within an app, like how you have Compose Email currently. Instead of sending you to Mail/SMS it opens up a "sheet" > send your message then the sheet disappears and you are still in the original app.

As far as I can tell, you can not reply to a text message from within an app. It just takes you to the SMS app when you tap reply. Though fortunately you now have proper saved state.

A reply function would be much more useful than the compose function. I mean, if you're in another app, you can just wait until it's convenient to compose a text message.

The annoying thing occurs when you get a text message, and you want to read it and possibly reply to it, but by doing so, you have to quit your application. It's not so bad for apps that resume where you left them, but very irritating when you know they don't.

That said, the multi-tasking should solve that issue anyway.

iAds sounds terrible!

I hate adverts and certainly don't want them appearing in my games.

How else do you think you will get free games in the future?
People want good quality games for free. The coder has to eat and live a little!

However, if the implement ads in paid for games, that would be VERY, VERY bad.

New hardware is announced at WWDC, in June.

It really isn't anything to worry about.

At the end of the day developers need to be making money to continue to develop for the platform. Food needs to be put on the table. This gives them an easy way of making money in exchange for a lower price for their software. I think you will start to see a lot of games that have two versions - subsidised with ads, and unsubsidised but free of ads. That's fair don't you think?

As long as they aren't obtrusive or interupt gameplay then I don't see the problem. In game advertising is done pretty well on the Xbox, so hopefully it's done well here too.

Were you two watching the same announcement as me?

A bunch of features lifted straight from jailbroken iPhones and ADVERTS..... 800k users download adblock plus for firefox every week and theres a pretty good reason why, not to mention the vast number of people who use sky+ or similar devices to skip the adverts from TV shows

Games already use adverts but they are annoying and exit the game and load up the web browser, Apple are simply trying to make it a more seamless and less annoying experience.

They haven't invented ads on the iphone, they are just trying to make them less annoying for the user.

Some more bits coming out:

Developers working with the new iPhone Software 4.0 beta report the existence of a new background process named iChatAgent, the same process used by iChat on the Mac [Updated with alleged evidence of forward-facing camera as well]. Meanwhile, Note syncing via MobileMe and a handful of other enhancements have been highlighted in a series of screenshots.

The presence of iChatAgent strongly suggests that iPhone 4 could arrive with a feature Apple did not highlight in today's introduction: a bundled Instant Messaging client. Either that, or Apple's using the agent to facilitate some other task or failed to remove it from previously planned support for iChat on the iPad, both of which seem unlikely.

Update: AppleInsider also received word that iPhone OS 4.0 has two frameworks not found in version 3.2 on the iPad, dubbed IMCore.framework and IMAVCore.framework. These frameworks allegedly contain the strings "front facing" and "back facing.

In addition, IMAVCore.framework even contains strings that reference screen sharing.

A recent rumor had suggested that a front-facing video camera was amongst a handful of major hardware enhancements destine for fourth-generation iPhones due to ship this summer. Others include the adoption of the same A4 chip found inside the iPad and a new 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, as AppleInsider recently reported. A purported photo of a fourth-gen iPhone prototype can be seen here.

Intially I screamed noooooooooooooo when I read the iAd thing. Then I figured - well, they have ads now, right? The difference is going to be that rather than opening Safari when you click, it stays in-app. So - in theory - it'll just be neater ads rather than clumsy ones.

That said, clearly this is getting a major commerce push, so ads will probably become more widespread.

More bits:

Apple did quite a bit today bringing its iPhone OS up to feature parity (and sometimes beyond) when compared with other modern smartphone platforms, and here's one piece not discussed today that we've been long wanting: web and Wikipedia search directly from Spotlight. WebOS and Windows Phone 7 have had it since inception, and Android's had it since Donut, and we're pretty happy to say that our OS 4.0-equipped iPhone is now also among the ranks, just 13 months after it first got a search bar. There you have it, folks, iPhone Spotlight is now useful.

At last.

Technically they had it before Window Phone 7 as it wont be out till the end of the year.

This is a hardware thing so we won't know about things like this till the new iPhones release.

Multi-tasking isn't lifted straight from Jailbroken iPhones, pretty sure the principal of multi-tasking has been around for a fair while. Apple have just announced a way of doing it that they feel doesn't sacrifice performance and battery life.

No-one is saying that content with ads is better than that same content with no ads, but the simple fact is that unless you're actively paying for the content then the providers have to get some money somehow.

If you're reading in landscape mode - try put the phone upside down (earpiece down) . It stops it flipping when reading in bed etc.

To be fair, isn't this going to ship before Windows Phone 7? I'm sure Apple could have announced it earlier, but this is typically when they do it every year.

I notice Job's made a dig at Flash when talking about iAds saying they're HTML5 and got a round of applause.

Ads with animation and video spread over such a large user-base will help hasten the demise of Flash IMHO.

Apparently some of the tools which converted Flash games into apps have been blocked in the new SDK.

When I said a bunch of features lifted from jailbroken phones I meant that most of Apple's updates in OS4.0 are features that can already be done if you JB your iPhone. Folders also isn't a feature thats been created by jailbreaking as it's been around since the earliest incarnations of windows but it is a feature that can be added to jailbroken iPhones

It's almost as though Steve jailbroke his iPhone and then thought to himself "wow so this is what the phone can actually do.... suppose we better do it and then maybe people wont want to jailbreak"

It's actually like, "we have x number of developers and y amount of time, what are the most important features we can do well, in time for this release.

Repeat each year.

Of course devs are going to break into their phones and fill in the gaps. That's how the jailbreaking scene works, for any piece of equipment.

Isn't that pretty much how all OS releases are done.

Most of the people that aren't happy about the OS 4.0 update are not iPhone users so why do they care, it's as if some people take offence at iPhone users looking forward to an update.

I don't even post in Android update threads because for the most part I don't care as I don't have an android phone, and from what friends have said about various android devices I wont be getting one anytime soon.

Would I have liked for Apple to have added widgets to the home screen? Yes, I love how Windows Phone 7 does it.

Will it stop me buying the next iPhone? No, because it isn't that important to me.

It will interest me how MS Fanboys react about Windows Phone 7 not having cut and paste because they acted as if it was the be all and end all when the iPhone didn't have it, although it wasn't that important to me and I think I have used it a dozen times or so since the release of it on the iPhone.

There definitely is a (strong) element of tribalism around. It's been the case forever in the tech world so it's nothing surprising. What I will say is that the featurelist culture is ****ing annoying to me. That you are crazy for buying x when it doesn't have y or z.

The great thing about this market is that there is genuinely good choice about - a number of viable platforms, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. I just don't understand why people get all pissy and offended about platforms they haven't bought into.
