What won't you buy own brand or smart price?
Tesco do 36 Weetabix type cereal biscuits, for just 75p.
True, they don't taste exactly like Weetabix, but at a whisker over 2p a biscuit, I can accept the slight (but not unpleasant) difference. So, my question is, are there any items that you insist on buying major brand, no matter how much of a saving you could make, by buying own brand, smart price, etc.? |

I've never liked economy brand orange juices. The premium ones really do taste better. I'd never touch Tesco Value lager, cider or other supermarket equivilants either.
I'm open to try all own brand products though, economy tinned tomatoes and kidney beans can always be found in my cupboard! |

I hate to break this to you, but when you buy a 1 Litre tetrapak of fruit juice, whether you buy a well know brand, an own brand, or a "Happy Shopper" type brand, you are getting the same juice, and very likely from the same boiling vessel batch.
There are definitely differences between brands of orange juice. Sainsbury's Taste the Difference is my personal preference, although Tropicana and the standard "not from concentrate" product are both fine. Morrissons juices on the other hand, taste completely different to me.

I buy Asda's Smart Price OJ but I think that's about it for 'human consumption'.
One of my cats is on a really strict fat free diet and can only have rice, boiled chicken, fish and cottage cheese. I buy all Smart Price stuff for him. I do buy quite a lot of Asda own brand stuff though - Bran Flakes, Weetabix, loo roll...but I won't compromise on things like Pepsi Max, Colgate sensitive toothpaste, Bold 2 in 1 liquitabs and so on. And I cannot stand own brand bread - from any supermarket. It has to be Hovis or Warburtons. OMG - I'm a food snob!

![]() Also chicken is ok (please forgive me Jamie & Hugh) I stay away from the bacon on which you get more scum in the pan than meat and usually stay away from mince, mostly because of this image ![]() http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/tesco...ince_800g.html Never tried value steak. |

I never buy anything value or smartprice, ever. Going by the prices that they charge I assume that the packaging costs more than the product and that can't be good.

Some meat is ok. Smartprice/value pork chops seemed ok to me, especially if you semi-poach and serve with a sauce (I've been in to making pork with sage butter and cider sauce recently).

Smart price bread is disgusting. Only Hovis, Kingsmill or Warburtons for me. Smart Price baked beans are ok, but still not good enough to rival Heinz or Branston. Fairy Liquid and branded liquitabs are a must too. Oh, and coffee. I've never had Smart Price coffee but I had Asda coffee once and it was vile. Now I will only get Nescafe, Dowe Egberts, Kenco, etc.
But all other stuff is fine. |

Bread - smart price is awful. My OH only drinks Asda coffee - no Nescafe rubbish for him
![]() Look in my sister cupboard and fridge and there are no OB's of anything, only cadbury choc puddings, Heinz beans etc. even if you tell her they are good she will not have them in the house. |

Definitely not any type of meat, coffee, tea, bread.
Spring water yes but that's about it, and sometimes freezer bags. |

I will not compromise on baked beans and tomato ketchup.
It has to be Heinz. Everything else I am open to own-brand. Marks and Spencer is all own-brand anyway, and they are all delicious. I'm not going to fanny about by buying some cheapo 3p tin of something.... food is very important and I earn enough to buy what I think is good quality and tastes good. |

I do buy Lidl fruit juices and cold meats and they are excellent, as are their dishwasher tablets. Not sure if they qualify as 'own brand', but they are brands you don't see anywhere else.

![]() ![]() ![]() I didn't notice any difference in quality. Not sure about the life of the pigs though and didn't check if it was British Pork or anything like that. |

![]() I actually prefer the taste of some own brand stuff (Asda baked beans) and value stuff (Morrisons sliced corned beef) over major brands. |

I like Tesco Value white bread and their Weetabix.
I use quite a lot of the value stuff actually as being a student I don't have much money and I find its pretty much as good as the brand. I use the value chicken, I don't like that it's not free range and theres a bit more waste to cut off than usual but it's so much cheaper. |
