Hi,
Im thinking about getting a cheap dvd player that will allow me to play VCDS ON CD-R and CD-RW. Also, MP3S.

I currently have Oritron DVD600, but it dont support them.

Are any of these good?

Hey Thanh,

The player you have linked to doesn't play VCDs or MP3s.

I wouldn't give up on your present player yet. Often all that is needed to make players play VCDs is a remote hack. Try searching on the web for a hack for your player. I would find you one but this internet connection is rediculous and it has taken me three attempts just to login, all of which took around 3 minutes each, but that's dial up for you! Make sure it is for you player though.

If not, have a look at the Pacific DVD1002 at ASDA. They have had excellent reviews, and will play just about anything you can throw at it; it definitely play VCDs and MP3s. There is a remote hack to make it multi region readily avaliable, but I wouldn't bother if you don't need it multi region. I am getting a Pacific very soon to replace my present Yamada, whih leads me nicely on to the Yamada!

I have had a Yamada DVDSlim 5520 since Christmas. It is a damn fine machine, you can get one from Amazon for £40.

It looks good, has an excellent remote (some of the buttons are glow in the dark too) and plays almost anything. CD-R, -RW, DVD-R, -RW, +R, +RW, VCDs and MP3 cds, as well as Kodak Picture CDs. It has an excellent interface, especially for MP3s and for the JPEG handling, which allows you to display JPEG picture files through the player that have been recorded on CD. Why am I replacing it? Well it is incompatible with my TV, which is a TV/VCR combi, due to having Macrovision copy protection. Concequently, it only outputs in CVBS, which I can't stand.

Also, I was disappointed to find the centre output didn't work on the integrated Dolby Digital decoder. This will have probably have been a one off problem, it is just unforunate that I got one that had a knackered output, when someone else who just connected it by SCART to the TV wouldn't have even been aware of it.

The Macrovison is pathetic, I believe it is due to my Bush TV though, it should only kick in when you are trying to record, not just view!

Hope this helps

This Macrovision - isn't it when you try to tape a DVD? Because when I have the DVD Player connected to a Hitachi VCR it copies the DVD OK and when it is connected to the LG the colour goes all odd - and when i have it connected t one tele it works ok but when it was connected to our old tv it didn't always work properly - isn't there a thing at £20 from Makkro you can buy that connects up to the DVD Player that copies the DVD - VHS ok?

Has anyone tried the Akura DVD on sale at Somerfields for £30.
Says on the box it plays mp3s, jpgs, kodak cdr & rw's etc.
I read on other forums it's multi region out of the box too.
Can't confirm this tho still waiting for a review from someone who's bought one.

Info here:-

Macrovision is copy protection that screws up the brightness when you try to record the DVD onto VHS. It should only kick in when you try to record, but on some VCRs it does it anyway, whether you try to record or not. Unfortunately like most copy protection methods, the innocent parties are the ones who suffer; even though I'm not trying to record, it still screws the picture up. In the Yamada manual it even says it doesn't work with TV/VCR combis, wish I knew that before I bought it, although I am not intending to keep the TV a long time.

Well the Pacific 1002W I bought today has disappointed me also - it lacks the analogue Dolby Digital outputs I require for my speakers. Shame really, as it looks a good player; I didn't even unpack it when I got home, as looking at the manual showed there was no Dolby decoder on board.

So I'm on the search again, I'm starting to hate DVD players.

Thanh - avoid Index, Argos etc. for DVD players, they offer poor value for money compared to other places!

If you don't need a Dolby Digital decoder, why not have a look at the Pacific? They have a 1001 for £30.

I used to have the 100 model and when "unlocked" to play vcds, it would play them on verbatium cd-rws. no other brand would work but verb. worked fine!

The DVD Player is Unlocked, and can read VCDS. But these VCDS are written onto a sort of different disk, imported from china and japan! ( As we watch chinese films!). Its already Unlocked ( and Muti-regioned), but it wont play CD-R's or CD-RW's. Instead, if you take a non CD-R and you look at teh back, its that kind of disk, like a CD.

I went down my horrible Asda. None left, and they are'nt expeecting anymore.

I didn't understand that at all, does it play some VCDs? In that case maybe the imported ones are burnt incorrectly?

Okay. For example. Look at teh back of a CD-R/CD-RW. Notice the colour of the disk. Now get a Audio CD, notice the colour at the back of the CD. My DVD Player can only play those CD's with an Audio looking backgroud, compared to CDR'S-CD-RWS Colour on their own background.
