is this normal??? I swore to myself I'd never be like that - but a lot of my new music purchases are more obscure singers and listen to A LOT of older music....(just ordered the Yazoo boxset and some Olivia Newton John albums from the 70's!!!)
I am old. It's official |

My mum said the other day that your music taste stops at a certain era and you don't tend to listen to anything past that.

I'm 26 and, with a few exceptions, I feel the same. I couldn't tell you who was in the top 10 at the moment. The only reason I know what's going on sometimes is because of Digital Spy, otherwise I'd be blind.

Awww, I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing, it could just be that someone is interested in more things that what is popular today. My brother is 29 and he's more into popular music now than I am, my other brother is 32 and is similar he's stuck in the 80's/90's and thinks today's music in the USA is shifting towards more of a hip-hop sound and he doesn't like it at all.

.But getting back to the original topic, I am 33 & hardly listen to the charts these days due to the amount of Dance, R'n'B / X factor type rubbish played in it. |

i stopped listening to modern music in the late 80's when s/a/w were prominant and pretencious indie bands were around. .... that was a mistake, and i subsequently missed out on many of the 90's great music that im now trying to get back. i do listen to modern music if i like it .... 'she said' is great! and i like gaga.
id suggest not giving up, just keep an open mind and eye on whats happening, pick the best, ignore the rest. |

I'm 21 myself and I couldn't actually tell you one single track I think is in the top 50. Since I said that, I'm gonna have a look at the top 40, see what I can garner...
EDIT: Ok, there's about two songs I think I'll like in the clubs (however rare that I go these days), one song I just like (Alicia Keys), a couple I "don't mind", and about 35 tracks that will annoy the crap out of me. |

I haven't had any interest in the charts since I was at school.
"Getting old" musically for me is when you stop trying to find new music and just listens to whatever was popular in your youth. I friend of mine listens to nothing but late-80s/early 90s indie and swears blind that there has been nothing as good since. Of course, there has, it just needs to be looked for, and the charts aren't the place to find it, just as they weren't in the 80s or 90s. |

I'm 20, and I can find a few songs I wouldn't complain about if they were played somewhere where the music was out of my control, like a shop or a pub, but the majority of what I listen isn't usually found in those sorts of places. Or in the charts.

No it comes to us all at various stages.....
![]() I think as you get older your music tastes settle down into particular types or genres. I do make a point of seeing who is the Top 10 virtually every week (on line) probably out of habit. The charts have always been hit and miss anyway, we tend to remember things through rose tinted spectacles. Youtube some of the Top of the Pops countdowns from years ago and you will see what I mean

Chart music becomes less of an obsession the older you get.
Some people never imbrue themselves in it and just see it as a folly of youth. I am 37 and like some chart music but not all and am not obsessive as I was as a teenager. I don't listen to Radio 1 any more or watch chart shows on television like I would watch religiously every Thursday and Saturday. |
