I'm 32 and I do like some chart music (I love Lady Gaga for instance) but have to say that I always gravitate back to years gone by - like the early Nineties for example, nearly every genre was better back then.

Nothing wrong with being a pretrentious little tw*t if it means preferring good music to the sh*te that's currently in the charts.
Personally, I'm amazed by how many teenagers I've talked to who prefer the music of the 60's and 70's to what's around today.

I was also like that at the age of 15, I'm now 19 and studying a degree in Commercial Music.
I couldn't care less about who was number one these days. I very rarely know who is in the charts, although I generally find out through friends.
I feel a lot of music has become really commercialised and is only released to make money. You very rarely see songs in the charts these days that people have released for their love of music. Many people believe music to be a good place to make money, it isn't exactly that!
I like artists such as Lady Gaga and Florence however!

How exactly does having a personal opinion on a piece of music make someone a pretentious tw*t? People are entitled to their own opinion, and many people are mainly influenced by what is in the mainstream. They listen to the stuff in the charts and on the radios.
What people do think are the pretentious tw*ts?

I agree, my dad just turned 55 and he also loves Lady Gaga, I tend to go back to the music of every other decade other than the current, and the end of the previous decade.
I agree nearly every genre was better back then, even though I was a small child. It's all to do with the commercialisation of music, and making music for money.

They are a marketing tool, you're right! They are for people like Simon Cowell who only wants fame and fortune, not to simply sell music 'cos it's something they love!
I like some of today's music, but I prefer music from the 60's to 90's. Everything seems to sound the same these days - it's all so bland and over produced. I'm 29.

I turned 35 a couple of weeks ago, and I have no idea who is in the charts these days!
I used to be so up on my pop music...watched The Chart Show, Top of The Pops etc religiously...
Now I prefer the oldies but goodies...I adore Motown, Northern Soul...
But I also still love the 80's

Most teenagers don't know who's number one. These days either.
I don't think people take much notice of the charts since Top of the pops ended. It's a shame in some ways as you can have a number one record and hardly anyone will even know.

I always watched top of the pops as a kid, you're right. It was good!
I did notice the charts at xmas however, simply 'cos I hate X factor....
I'm 35 and thought I'd always follow the top 40 and popular music as well as more obscure stuff, but from buying around 5 albums a month 10 years ago I think I got 3 in the whole of last year, the 20 year old me would be so ashamed...
One theory I've got is that because music is now available digitally there's not the excitement of picking up a physical CD in the first week or so on release, or else it's going to be more expensive or impossible to find in the shops, because now it's going to be available at the same price - or free- forever. I think losing the excitement of buying new stuff in the shops has affected my enjoyment of any new music?

Well I don't buy singles any more but the last 4 albums I bought were Everybody Wants to Be on TV ~ Scouting For Girls, The Defamation of Strickland Banks ~ Plan B, Congratulations ~ MGMT & Simple Times by Joshua Radin and I am older than 32 - so some people do move with the times

same here,,im 35 and i did enjoy all the stuff in my 20s.. now nothing new gives me 'the shivers' and think its a good enough song to download. its weird i always loved hearing what came out next, it was the soundtrack to time periods of your life. now they all look like 12 thats maybe why
I think some people as they get older fail to make the transition with the times and become a bit old.

I definetely couldn't care less on a chart placing they like I used to, I remember being furious that girls alouds untouchable didn't make the top 10 but these days I wouldn't be bothered, for instance kiss it better flopped on its arse but I still think it's 10 times better than work, which has done great things but I still think it's garbage.
I haven't seen the top 40 but had a glance yesterday and have copied the link here

My total was 13, there are some great tracks in there in particular ones from dua lipa and Ariana grande, I guess the problem is over a quarter of them have been there for over 20 weeks

2 for me..... 'hotter then hell' is listeable and i really like 'this girl' - kungs...
I find it hard to believe that someone of my age (I'm also 35) can listen to the top 20 on Radio 1 and not like a single track.

I checked, There are 6 Fts and a Vs.
I've heard of Rihanna but she's only 2 of the Fts - they aren't her songs.
There's a samey sound about so many of the songs. I think it's mainly down to the producers picking from a small range of acceptable sounds. There's a slightly melancholic tone to so many of the songs and no-one with much lyrical ability beyond the trite. Little Mix's 'Hair' was in there recently and that was a bit of fun.
Anything that sounds even vaguely different I listen out for..maybe the Fifth Harmony song, 'Work from Home', M0's 'Final Song' and Zara Larsson's 'Lush Life'. This is the unchallenging music of a generation of young people who simply want to conform and take no risks.

There was a time when I was always searching for the next band to become addicted to and could never imagine a time when it would be different. However, I think the last album I heard that really knocked me out was Super Extra Gravity by The Cardigans and that was over ten years ago now. I think I started to really hate chart music as soon as they started to use that stupid electronic vocal manipulation on almost every song. That has been the real plague on modern music.
