New Scoring System
Jan2555*GG*

On next weeks Dancing With the Stars......they are trying out a new scoring system where the judges are giving 2 sets of scores......one for technique and one for performance.

I think this is a great idea that I hope the BBC are considering for strictly.

Think its a great idea but will it work in practice?? It will be interesting to watch next week and see.

I think this idea would work even better on doi though

Sounds good, so it'll be interesting to see if it works out.

I agree

If you have a judge expert enough to mark on technique.

I think that's a great idea because it means the celebrities who give a brilliant performance full of energy and enthusiasm which may not be great technically will be rewarded for that.

I think it will lift the standards as well because they will have to be technically accurate and entertaining.

I think this is a good idea but I can just see all the complaints with Alesha judging technique if this was to happen.

True. Maybe they could have 2 judges scoring on technique (Craig and hopefully Karen) and 2 on performance (Alesha and Bruno)?

I'm entirely against it - the show's already about the judges enough as it is without doubling their input. One score, per person, based on technique and performance, as it is now, works fine - this is just far too fiddly. This just strikes me as a way to add a patronising "pat on the head" score for people who aren't very good at dancing.

I agree, seems pointless to me and may overcomplicate things.

There's no point seperating technique from performance, then getting rid of the most experienced technique judge. Len and Karen (hopefully) for technique; Craig and Bruno for performance.

Or each judge being told to mark out of 5 for technique, 5 for performance, and add them.

Might have the added bonus of reducing the ridiculous number of 10's.

Sounds good in principle, but seeing as the dancing and hence the scoring is becoming less and less relevant, I don't see it having much effect in reality. The judges will always have their favourites and the public theirs. It'll never be a completely fair playing field.

Perhaps I'm just feeling PMTish today

Er yes....that's exactly the problem. Only Len is qualified to mark on technique. None of the others are, and that includes Craig.

I think Craig has made himself into an expert on technique because judging by his comments on the last series he does not miss the slightest mistake and will mark down accordingly. Bruno also seems to have upped his game last series because he was very quick to point out any mistakes .

I agree that they have upped their game. Bruno in particular was very much improved last series and so seemed to have taken on board criticism. But they are not experts and in fact Len often disagrees with Craig on technical points. Craig is just so confident in the way he delivers his comments that he gives the illusion of greater expertise. No matter what people think about Len personally, and his approach to judging, he does know his stuff (pity it isn't always that apparent though from his comments).

Yes totally agree - at the moment the only one qualified to comment on technique is Len - the others can talk the talk - but as has been pointed out Len does put Craig srtaight on many occasions - its just that Craig's delivery SOUNDS so knowlegeable that we need a real specialist there to put the record straight!

Having watched DWTS - I don't think it added much - it did give the less technical dancers a chance to get marks for their performance though, but I would hate to think what the result would have been on last series of SCD though!
