Amy - hmmm I'm really not sure tbh. She's a brilliant actress no doubt, but I think my own skepticism about ages has kind of transferred onto the companion role now. I like the mix of young/old (Eccleston/Piper, Tennant/Tate) far more than I like them similar ages..... I'm also not sure how taken I am with the very similar 'wise beyond their years' characters of both the Dr and companion.

Plenty of time to judge that properly though ”

Tennant/Tate are the closest together in terms of their ages. I thought that was one of the reasons their pairing worked so well.

I like it that the relationship between the Doctor and companion seems like a brother/sister relationship, kind of like the 4th Doctor and Sarah. They may bicker and annoy eachother from time to time but they seem to have this great bond. (Just ignore the fact that she perved on him getting dressed, and that she will probably seize upon the chance to give him a snog)

Despite liking them both very much in the first episode, I ended up liking them even more in the second one.

My only criticism of Matt Smith is that when he was wet he looked like a rubber gargoyle, and that's not even meant to be a criticism on my part. He looked weirdly cool.

They've both been excellent so far.

I thought Matt would make a great doctor as soon as he was announced, but he's surpassed my expectations.

I'm loving both the Doctor and Amy. My kids (aged 8 & 5) are really enjoying the series so far and have watched both episodes twice.

I'm loving them both, but I wish Karen wouldn't do the eyes widening thing so often because it seems unnatural sometimes and several seconds too long.

But maybe he shouldn't be emotional, because emotion is a human characteristic? I think the doctor needs to be quirky and unusual rather than emotional like a human.

Back to topic: Matt is excellent, for me he is the doctor and I have watched most of classic Who as well as new Who (and I loved DT and CE).

Karen is great as well, very feisty which I like. I still need to see more of her though. Their chemistry is great and I hope it remains a friendship rather than a romantic liaison.

I do like them but there is something missing that I can't put my finger on. Hes an improvment on Tennant anyway and Amy has potential but I'm not keen on the overall arc they always seem to do (crack in space/time theme this year).

I think Amy should die when she leaves.

Ive started watching Dr Who again since Tennat & Davies left.

Matt Smith is a real find for the show & i ive found the programme far more fun than the rubbish that was served up previously under Tennant. His overacting , shouting etc was dire & after the 3rd episode i never tuned in again.

As for the sidekick thankgod the days of Davies obsession for chavs has been given the boot. Bllie Piper , Katherine Tate, dear god above , barrel scraping without equal.

Sorry

Another thumbs up here for Matt Smith. I got fed up with Tennant in the end, it just seemed that his ego got in the way from Martha Jones' time onwards. Matt Smith's take on the role seems to be far more understated and I prefer that.

I'm not sure about the Amy Pond character yet. Will have to watch more stories before I make my mind up there.

It's all a bit chicken and egg, really, isn't it? The writers probably had character traits in mind, and then would be looking for actors who could portray them - but then would in turn be influenced by the input from the actors they chose. What did interest me was the extent to which the choice seems to have been so acutely visual, especially this time, particularly with regard to the casting of Amy (Moffat mentioned in Confidential that they were looking for someone of a particular height and build, for example).

WRT Amy stressing the point about the doctor sharing attributes with the whale (i.e. being old, lonely and kind), to me she was doing that because the Doctor was failing to see it (or at least acknowledge it) and she was determined to get him to catch on.

First episode I loved Matt and thought Karen was ok in the roles. This week, I thought Karen was fab but Matt was a little awkward and forced at times. I like both so far, though, and hope they settle in fast - more sure of who their characters are and how they will behave as second nature. Looking forward to seeing more

Umm.

Tennant was only 2 years and 11 months older than Tate.

Meanwhile Mattis 5 years and 1 month older than Karen.

Me too!
I thought she was fab. And I thought her resemblance to the older Amy was totally convincing - then I was told that the two girls are cousins. So that explains it!

And I think Matt Smith is doing a great job so far.
I liked DT but found him OTT towards the end.

I've really enjoyed the two Eps we've had.

Actually, Tate (b.1968) is 2 years and 11 months older than Tennant (b.1971)

I like Matt but, like a lot of actors, he often doesn't know what to do with his hands. Watch what he's doing with them when he's talking to the Atraxi on the roof in the first episode. Fidgeting away.

Thats clearly quite intentionally part of his character. He knows exactly what he is doing with his hands. It's deliberate.

Your opinion. My opinion is that he doesn't.

The bit on the roof called for stillness which is incredibly hard for an actor as it can look very awkward. Smith is pumping his hand like he's squeezing a stress-relief ball.

I love it when she does that and to me it has little nuances that make it different each time. Completely infatuated with her largely due to this actually lol

The bit you're referring to is a loop, he only did it once but the editors looped that sequence

I think Matt is superb. He's a real find and I'm predicting big things for the guy in the future (reminds me a little of impressive I thought Carey Mulligan was when she was in the show and well.. look at her now).

Karen.. less sure of. Gorgeous of course, good actress, not sure of the character yet.
