Sat Nav - Hidden costs
Chris Green
11-04-2010
Are there any sat navs which include map updates for the life of the machine. My Garmin Nuvi, which is already 18 months old (and therefore on borrowed time knowing my luck) is going to cost me £100 to update 'for the life of the machine' - I wouldn't mind if it was for my life. Since it's no longer warrantied, I'm loathe to spend more on something which could go wrong tomorrow when that's 2/3rds the cost of a new one with the latest maps.

Please don't tell me about camera updates - I already get these more cheaply via PocketGPS.

Bully for you - I doubt if you've ever tried finding your way out of Madrid Airport and onto what appears to be the equivalent of 3 concentric M25s with what purport to be 2009's maps though. Try it, then tell me that bit about '99%' again.

Why are people interested in camera updates anyway?

Speed cameras are quite visible anyway and are irrelevant unless you are exceeding the speed limit. You would be better off without your satnav telling you about a speed camera as it is an unnecessary distraction.

If you stick to the speed limit which is there for a good reason, then knowing the location of cameras is pointless.

Absolutely agree. I turned of the speed camera warning as it used to annoy me with is binging. If you feel a desire to go fast, book a track day and full your boots

5230, with a memory card, less than £100. Free maps for most of the world. Costs less than a lot of dedicated sat navs, and it can take pictures, make phone calls and browse the web. Much more flexible alternative.

I have a TomTom, and Garmin Mobile PC built into my car, but I have been using the Nokia Ovi Maps recently and am very impressed.

Thanks for all the input which frankly is as much use as chocolate teapot, having failed entirely to address my query.

If I'd wanted to buy a mobile, I'd have done so.

Likewise, if my query had anything to do with speed cameras, being lectured on keeping to the speed limit just might have been relevant.

If I'd been 'clever enough' to do without a sat-nav, I'd have done so.

Jeez, all I wanted to know was whether there's a sat-nav with free map updates!

A sat nav that comes with free updates is Nokia with Ovi maps - that is what you wanted to know.
I'm am so sorry no one could offer anything better, however if you think the rest of use are 'chocolate teapots' then please put google/ Bing to good use.

As for the rest, that is often the way a discussion will meander on.

As imagegrill has said, we've given you an answer.

Nokia 5230 with a memory card. You don't need to use it as a phone, it can be used without a SIM card as a perfectly good satnav, easily as good as any of the dedicated units.

£80 (maybe less) for the phone, £10 for a memory card. Only caveat is getting a car holder/charger, but those can be had for about a fiver.

I've used TomTom and Navmans before, and this is easily as good as, if not better.

how rude and unappreciative.you got the answer to your question.
a number of people have told you about nokia maps and you have chosen to ignore them.
if your not happy with the responses given here then learn to use google.
consider yourself blocked . i for one will not be helping in future.
your attitude is all wrong !

I am with chris green here.

Any way camera pings are very usefull when you are in a strange town and the scroats have conveniently put a sign in the line of view

I have come to the conclusion that a new sat nav is cheaper than updates.

Co pilot live is £25 app for many smart phones. and it co exists with you music and with a £100 sony bluetooth car radio is great. It appears to update via itunes on an iphone.

My nav-man is now 3 years old and I have many map errors and roundabout on it that should/shouldnt be there. they want £10+30 for new maps

You don't need old maps to get errors-there's plenty on the up to date maps!

Exactly what use are camera pings when driving in an area you are unfamiliar with? Surely if you are driving in an area you are unfamiliar with, you should be sticking to the speed limit because you are unaware of what hazards you may be approaching but have not yet seen.

Whilst you might want to have free rein to drive at any speed on the roads, I'd rather not have maniacs like you going at 50-70mph down the main road near where I live (the police sometimes do that but at least they have lights and sirens on when they do so). The speed limits on all roads are there for a good reason, and that is to minimise accidents.

Your mentality makes me thinks there should be more cameras to ensure that you never have the chance to exceed the speed limit on sections of road which aren't covered by them currently.

If you happen to ALREADY HAVE A MOBILE WITH ORANGE, you can get Orange maps - sat nav with voice alerts. It uses your data connection to download the maps as you drive without being charged for the data itself. It's free on certain price plans.

I know i'll get flamed for posting this as it's not a sat nav alone as such, but it's the best solution i can think of without having to pay for map updates.
