It's the first time I've seen the Daleks since being a kid that I've thought to myself A) these look a bit scary now, and B) I want the toys! Going back and watching Victory of the Daleks, I do feel that people were too harsh on the episode altogether. Maybe the new DW team just thrust too much newness on the regular audience a bit too quick, but I loved it. It's a great episode, and the Daleks just look tremendous. So nyahh!

Not wanting to inflame the whole debate again but their general lack of scariness is the biggest issue I have with them.

Obviously as adults its hard for us to judge but the reaction of my son (9 yrs) was just to snigger. Which was a shame because the build up to the "Big Reveal" was very good. But I could feel all tension in him evaporate as the Playmobile Daleks trundled out of their hidey-hole.

That was the first time he'd laughed at a monster in Doctor Who

If it weren't for the fact they were all bright colours they'd be scary. It's the fact they were blatently designed with marketing (eg the toys) in mind that ruins them.

I hope we don't get a desperate knee-jerk reaction from the DW team, and end up with another Dalek reboot. I want to see more of this new set. I think they look absolutely brilliant. I mentioned elsewhere that I think they look very 60's and yet modern. It's a very cool look imho. Especially the new head design, it's fantastic. I can't believe no-one feels the same way.”

Everybody on here bangs on about fisherprice, but for me that isn't the obvious reference point. They put me in mind of the multi-hued ipod, the return to brightly coloured matt paints on cars following years of metallics, the return to malanine furniture especially in kitchen design. I think they're update has made them more striking, relevent, and all the more scary for it. The reveal certainly sent a shiver up my spine.

I think in a decade or so, people will look back at the old Daleks and say: “Oh dear. That little thing was a Dalek?”

My only real gripe with the new Daleks (which applies to the old ones, too) is that I think clean, perfect, pretty things just aren’t very scary.

How I’d do the Daleks
I think grit and dirt is scary and if I were to reinvent the Daleks, my Daleks would be covered in dirt with dents, bruises and repairs. Parts would be cracked or broken off, revealing a terrifying mixture of electronic and organic internal components. As well as more external components visible, all looking quite dirty and hazardous.

The colours would be darker, too, and they would look more “industrial” and less “retail”. Daleks should look like something you see in a factory or a warehouse; not a car showroom.

I would also give the Daleks scarier sound effects, too. Not change the classic blaster noise, but add more little industrial noises to the Daleks’ movement, to make them sound more intimidating. Nasty noises. Noises that make your skin crawl. Maybe a low but constant electrical buzz or hiss whenever one is in the room?

For me, Daleks are scary because they remind me of the fear of electric devices, like pylons, and circuit boxes, and things like that. To me, this picture sums up my fear of Daleks, and if you made it look dirty, old and slightly damaged, it would be Dalek material.

However, I think bigger, slightly bulkier Daleks is a very good thing. I also thought it was a clever move to make “pure” Daleks that are brand new and fresh, and I love how they destroyed their creators. I only wish they’d have done more instead of just coming out, standing more or less still for ten minutes, then leaving!”

Well I didn't want the Dalek's to change too much but I agree with your photo. Daleks are scarier if they aren't shiny and buff looking. At the moment they remind me a bit of tanks which are scary but human-scary; it is scarier when people are afraid of something not as obvious as big and new and tanky.

Playing the Doctor Who computer game download, the new Daleks certainly seem just as scary in the first-person, when you're trying to get past them without being frazzled!

Really ? I must admit my first thoughts were "Why oh why oh why. Closly followed by, Plastic Daleks !!! What are they thinking of. To me it stinks of Moffat being determined to get rid of as much of R.T.D's legacy as he can. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I agree, but for me this goes further than a rejection of RTD's Daleks. The 2010 redesign is the first real departure from the 1963 original. All the other changes have really simply been variations on the theme.

Well I liked Victory of the Daleks all along. I dont post on here that regularly so never joined in the debate about it. Having a scan through though I am surprised at the consensus against it. I thought it was very entertaining. I think a lot of the disagreement seems to be between those who seem to regard Doctor Who as some sort Henrik Ibsen style high drama and those who just think its the most entertaining programme on the telly. I liked DT but I am still relieved we have swung back towards fun after the awful pompousness of the Christmas specials. I dont think this series has been stupid fun either but inventive, witty fun or possibly just fun fun.

Good post, and I agree about the last RTD Christmas specials (sadly). I just thought that they lacked proper focus, especially considering where they were leading, and were often head-scratchingly baffling and somewhat messy. I've said before, I'm a Doctor Who fan, not a fan of any particular writer, and I adored the RTD Who era. I just expected a completely different thing at Christmas for Tennant's swansong, to what we actually got. However I will not rag on the five phenomenal years he gave us.

I agree about inventive fun, witty fun, and just fun fun too. For me, this series has had it in spades.

I disagree in as much as I think that Moff definitely doesn't want to dismantle RTD's legacy. I the evidence for this is in the continued use of cybus cybermen: surely the obvious point of departure from RTD era monster design would be in the use of mondas cybermen?
