Just checked my phone bill (Plusnet) and it appears that weekend calls to mobiles are the same price as weekday ones. Is this always the case? I assumed that weekends would be cheaper.

I'm not sure about Plusnet but BT charge me 22p for every connected mobile call even if its only 3 seconds long.

What's the minimum charge with plusnet for mobiles ?

I have a lot of calls on my itemised bill at 19p which I assume are calls that went to voicemail so I hung up immediately.

But you were probably still charged anyway.

As soon as the call's gone to voicemail (even if it's for less than a second), you'll be charged.

I'm sure that's true, but what I was trying to find out was whether the rates are the same at weekends as on weekdays. As my son is at university I tend to make a lot of calls to his mobile and this is pushing my landline bill up and I'm trying to figure out if there's any way to cut the cost.

If you used 18185 for calling mobiles, the charge would be only 5p for a 3 sec call.

When you say "weekdays" do you mean daytime or evening? I think you'll find the weekend rate is the same as the evening rate.

(As an aside, the best way to cut the cost might be to get a mobile on the same network as his)

Sorry to be picky, but when you say "I think you'll find" do you mean that the weekend rate is definitely the same as the evning rate? The impression I got from Plusnet's tariff page was that both daytime and evening rates apply at weekends.

I do have a mobile on the same network but I didn't realise there would be such a difference in call charges (I do now).

How strange. I see it says "Weekend calls will be charged at the daytime or evening rate", so it looks like no weekend rates for mobiles, but note the PlusNet Essential Home tariff says "Weekend calls will be charged at the evening rate"

Edit: just had a look at BT, and what they used to call BT Together Option 2 - Evening & Weekend Plan, seems to have disappeared in their recent package reshuffle. So maybe in answer to your original question, weekends don't exist anymore for non standard calls as far as the telco's are concerned. (And I was only complaining last week that Bank Holidays don't count as weekends any more, but maybe that was a few decades ago)
