I'm sure that next week we'll all be saying that Saturday 17th April's episode of Doctor Who is the best Dalek story ever, so I'm getting this thread started now.

What do you think (up to now) is the best Dalek story ever? I'm sure Genesis will be most people's choice, but personally I think it's overrated. My favourite is a tie between The Dalek Invasion Of Earth (Hartnell) and Rememberance Of The Daleks (McCoy).

What's yours?

Hopefully next weeks will be the best Dalek story , the next episode of Who should always hopefully be the best ever.

As for favourite Dalek episodes Dalek Invasion Of Earth without a shadow of a doubt, then Genesis, Parting of The Ways and then Dalek.

Remember the episode was penned by Mark Gatiss who played Lazarus from the clips and length of the episode it looks like he's a good writer. I'm really looking forward to it, especially in HD

For me it is Parting of the Ways, followed closely by The Stolen Earth, and then Dalek.

Gatiss previously wrote The Unquiet Dead and The Idiots Lantern

Genesis is a fantastic story, its one of the most famous classic adventures for a reason. Its just about perfect I think. In the new series I thought The Stolen Earth was a great episode, its follow-up wasn't so good despite the German Daleks, but it was a really epic first part that deserved a better ending than it got in Journeys End.

Totally agree with that. We had an action packed part one, followed by a gossip with Davros in part 2. I was shocked!!!!

I'm sure some people may be saying it, some people may not and there again some people will probably live without making comparisons but just rely on their enjoyment or non-enjoyment of the episode to formulate their opinion...

...as for the best Dalek episode ever: it tends to be the one that I'm watching at the time because each and every existing story has flashes of genius that make watching them a worthwhile exercise but since I'm being asked to make a choice it has to be the very first outing including as it did The Doctor's deceitful personality, the first ever view of an iconic foe along with an extremely well plotted story.

Evil of the Daleks

or

The Dalek Masterplan.

FWIW I never thought the Daleks transferred well to colour TV.

The Daleks in the new series ('Dalek' episode aside) have been pathetic. How many times are they going to be killed off FOREVER only to return later...?

For me it's Power of the Daleks

Oh yeah. Well we know he's a good writer then, 2 great episodes I know a lot of people bash The Idiots Lantern but I really enjoyed it and thought it was a good story. Ok it was one of the lighter weaker episodes but good fun.

Well, Davros had to figure prominently because he was the big returning villain, but instead of him being in charge there was that completely surplus to requirements rolling ketchup bottle of a Supreme Dalek that was zapped by Jack in about two seconds flat. I don't see what the point of that was, Davros might as well have been the leader.

Except that following the Dalek destruction of Davros in GOTD, he became a figure that was sought out when needed and was never the leader which was finally played out when he pretty much instigated civil war among his own creations in "Remembrance..."

As far as I'm aware, Davros was only brought into "The Time War" to help the losing side (although since that hasn't shown up on TV yet, it's merely speculation and not canon)

For me, so far nothing beats their shocking (to me, at least...) appearance in "Army of Ghosts", though that 5 seconds or so hardly counts as a whole episode!

Overall, so far I'd have to say Doomsday....

They had a devious purpose, the cult of Skaro was an interesting concept, the war with the cybermen was exciting to this fanboy in the extreme, and...oh yeah, a jet-black Dalek looked cool as hell

Dalek was also really good too....

There's something about them, their design, the way they move, the way the eyestalks rotate to look at each other....ohhh, I could watch them all day

For me, "Dalek" is the absolute first place, followed second by "Genesis"

The Daleks' Master Plan from the classic series & Dalek from the new series..

Also, Genesis of the Daleks was excellent

Genesis of the Daleks, then Dalek Invasion of Earth (really surprised by that...was amazing) then for third place, Dalek.

It's "Rememberance" for me -

Dalek on Dalek action and then the Abomination turns up (Special Weapons Dalek)

It also has a rather excellent Target books adaptation which really gives you a brilliant description of what controlling a computer augmented one "man" tank would be like.

I loved Dalek from the new series though, classic episode.
Sorry

Genesis of the Daleks for me. I also quite like Death to the Daleks as it's one of the first episodes I saw as a kid. Has a "great" don't step on that square cliffhanger.

It's 45 minutes as normal now, saying it was 65 minutes was an error on the BBCs behalf.

I expected big things from 'Genesis' when I first sat down to watch it, and found a decent story with a couple of good bits and lots and lots of unnecessary padding, which kind of spoiled it for me.

So I'd have to go with 'Dalek' - one of the few stories to actually make them terrifying.
